Max resolution in Smoke 2013, 8K ?
on Jul 2, 2012 at 5:59:37 pm

Hi, I am doing an exhibition project and need some odd resolution. 22680x1920 (21-screens vertical).
But Smoke stops at 8K... is there somewhere to change this ?

/Cheers Helge

Not that I'm aware of (and it's an issue for me, too). I suspect this 8K limit is actually imposed by OpenGL hardware.

From Brian Mulligan's excellent 101 Burning Questions Answered about Smoke 2013 [link]:
27. What resolutions can I work with in Smoke?
Smoke supports standard resolutions from 4K to SD. Non-standard frame sizes are also supported up to 8K in clip generation and Action resolution, but I was able to import a 10,000 pixel x 10,000 pixel .psd file.

You can try this... since you can import a larger than 8K image... you should be able to create a sequence and then insert the larger image into it. The timeline should reconform.

You are using a very large width.. so who knows. I do think that it is hard coded into the software and might have something to do with older code and OpenGL... but since you can import, it's worth a shot.

hi,

i would probably select the output res of the projector (or x2, x4 up to the 8k limit) & see the complete image just in a downres version.
should also give more interactivity & you have to split it up for output anyways ?

Looks like Shake comes to rescue me....!

Even on 10.8, shake runs. 22K out and in... perfect

You could also use After Effects that supports comps up to 30k x 30k.

Yes I could, but when splitting into 21 files, it becomes a mess in the renderquee, when it comes to many outputs runs... I don't want to add all 21 renders and duplicate them for each round of output...

With node based editing, like Shake and Nuke, it's just a matter of output nodes and render them all. Do a change in the edit and then output all, easily...
