1st hand experience with Smoke on latest iMac?
on Jun 15, 2012 at 8:33:59 pm

Looking for input from anyone currently running Smoke on the latest crop of iMacs. My questions at this point:

1. The new iMacs come with AMD graphics. Smoke works best with Nvidia, correct? Any issues here?

2. Do the new iMacs work well as part of a gig-ethernet shared storage network? What about Smoke's responsiveness on a shared network (assuming ProRes workflow, not uncompressed)? My understanding is that some past versions of iMac had an ethernet controller that caused issues with this type of setup.

3. Last question is more of a general iMac one - is the system hard drive user-serviceable/replaceable? Best upgrade I did in the last year is SSD for my 2011 Macbook Pro - I would want to do this with the iMac but avoid Apple's SSD pricing if possible.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Funny you should ask. I just ordered one 27" model with the SSD included. It's the 3.4 ghz model and I'm going to add 32GB of OWC RAM to it when it arrives. So give me another week or so and I'll let you know.

Thanks Walter, I'm currently testing on both Macbook Pro and 12 core but my iMacs are a bit old for Smoke. Will look forward to hearing how it goes for you.

My iMac at home is 2 years old and it's snappy with Smoke 2013.

I have a tricked out iMac. 3.4 GHz Intel Core i7, 32 GB 1333 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB,
Promise Pegasus R6. It's pretty snappy but you don't have to do much before you need to render. Using ProRes HQ clips. My day job is on a DS. So I am hoping this will turn out to be a great choice when I work at home. And hey, after 12 years on DS it's time to learn yet another interface.

Any idea - what's the bottleneck causing renders? Graphics card, processor or storage speed?

Hi Rob,

I found your post during some fact-finding about Smoke 2013 on iMac.

I'd be really Interested to hear your thoughts after using Avid DS as I too have been a DS user since v7.6.

Would love to know how it's all going for you.

Cheers, Kristian

Hey Kristian.

I have to be honest, after several hours of using beta build 1 I was disappointed in the performance.
If you want to chat offline, email me at rob@flyingbabypictures.com.

[Patrick O'Casey] "Any update on this Walter?"

Unfortunately no. We have just one of the machines in our shop so far and it's working daily on a documentary project in CS6. So I haven't even had time to install the PreRelease 1 on it yet. Sorry.
