Dailies Workflow Question
on Jun 10, 2012 at 10:35:00 am

Hi and apologies if this has been addressed already/is retrograde:

We are looking at a workflow where multiple AAF's will be sent from MC6 to Smac as edits are refined to client input. Will it be possible to make editorial changes in the Avid and send a new AAF to Smoke without having to start over, or manually copy FX from the previous timeline to the current one?

That is; can we refine a graded sequence via AAF import and retain the work already done on the sequence? Do we need to 'orginate' the material in Smac before importing proxies into MC6?

Thanks and apologies again for an offliner out of his depth.
Dan

One more try in English;
Does anyone know if Smoke for Mac 2013 has an equivalent to the 'colortrace' function in DaVinci Resolve?

Many Thanks

Your question implies a proper color grading module in Smac. As far as I'm concerned, CC and CW are old and outdated tools, good enough to do small tweaks in a pinch. Yes, there are people, who will claim, that they do grading in Smac all the time. And so are there plenty of people, who edit in AE, do sound design in FCP and composite in Scratch. Just because they can do it, doesn't mean you should. Until there is Lustre technology inside of Smac, I doubt Smac will get serious traction as a one app finishing solution. You can't finish without color grading. No one will be getting two Mac Pro's to do the finishing, as right now it is pretty much impossible to have Smac and Resolve installed on the same Mac. All of a sudden $3500 software turns into $10-15K solution...

It is possible to copy the Timeline Effects from one Sequence to the other. Segments are parsed an Effects are copied based on the Source Timecode and Tape name. When a match is found, the Effect is copied.

Be aware that there's one flaw to this method: the operation won't work properly when there are more than one segment with the same Source Timecode and Tape name each having different Timeline Effects.

Otherwise, you can "manually" do a Cmd-C, Alt-V to copy Effects from one segment to the other. It is also possible to copy an Effect clip to your Media List and drop it on top of your desired segments to apply the effects on them.

Thanks Jake & Frederic.
The damp squib of a mac pro update yesterday has made us look again - I think we have to give up on smoke.
