GPU cards and Videocards...
on May 27, 2012 at 1:22:08 pm

Since we are now building a suite with Resolve running on 3x GTX570 GPU card. And a Extreme 3D card for video output, will smoke run on this system using both the 3x570GPU and a Blackmagic Design video card,

or will it forever be AJA only ?

cheers Helge

Right now the specs call for AJA only and Autodesk has made no public statements regarding anything else. So if you're building your suite today and expect Smoke to run correctly on it when the Beta comes out next month, it won't work.

As a publicly traded company, Autodesk is very limited in what it can state publicly about the future. If BMD support hasn't been announced publicly, you're not going to hear anything different on this forum.

I could be wrong about the upcoming build, but there is a way; it's a bit of a hack, though.

It's possible to run DVI Output from Smoke to a broadcast monitor. Just set the preferences in Smoke. If you need SDI, use a Blackmagic DVI to SDI converter. If your monitor supports DVI Input, then you can bypass that step.

The main issue is getting to tape. If you need to master to tape, export out an Uncompressed 10-bit, and use FCP to do the deed. Of course, tape is becoming less of an issue these days.

I'm not quite sure on colorspace accuracy from the DVI Output, but to my eye, it looks good. Scaling in NTSC is weird, though. This may not be ideal, but it works.

It's not a hack. It is a standard feature of Smoke to run DVI out for the second monitor.
The issue doing it that way is, that OSX doesn't support 10 bit. For 10 bit you must use BM or AJA cards. So, if you're considering color grading with Smoke, keep considering AJA card...
