Disable wiretap and other background services
on Dec 5, 2013 at 11:40:42 pm

Hello. I'm very new to Smoke, I just installed it on my mac. I notice it runs lots of background processes, and I'd like to disable them when I'm not using Smoke. Is there a recommended way of doing this? I won't use Smoke very often, so I wouldn't mind if it takes extra work to restart the processes when needed. It just seems kind of crazy to have this many processes doing nothing. I counted 8:
backburnerManager
backburnerServer
ifffsWiretapServer
wiretapgateway (x5)

Open up the Smoke service monitor in the apps folder. You can turn off all the services there. They will restart when you reboot however.

Thanks. I tried that now, and it says all services are stopped. However, that created a dozen httpd processes. I notice in Service Monitor there's an option to run Backburner Manager at startup, but turning it off doesn't seem to have any effect.
I run an XAMPP apache server on this machine for Copra4, with which this is interfering. Maybe in the future, I'll spend the time combining the two http services in one apache instance, but for now I just need to disable all this Smoke stuff.
By the way, disabling 7 services after every reboot isn't really an acceptable solution, there must be a way to have them start off until manually enabled.

Well the legacy of Smoke is that it was designed as a workstation system where Smoke was the only thing running. These background services allow other autodesk video systems to read the framestore and projects over network.

Also, Background operations like caching and proxies and export can all be done even though Smoke isn't running.

I get that on a multipurpose system these can get in the way.

Hi Elliott.

sorry for the late reply.
Here's how you can disable Smoke's services from automatically starting:

1. Open the Terminal app.
2. Type the following command to create a temporary folder: mkdir ~/tmp
3. Not type this command to move the Smoke service start-up files to the temp folder:
sudo mv /Library/LaunchDaemons/com.autodesk.* ~/tmp
4. Enter your password when asked.
5. Restart your Mac and then start the Service Monitor to confirm that Smoke's services are off.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Robert.

Hello. We are running Smoke 2013 and I too was wondering about these services. It seems that httpd gets enabled and runs php? I am new to all of this and I am trying to figure out how to keep a lab full of machines up-to-date for php, because I keep getting dinged from my central ITS office for not having the latest php. It occurred to me that all our lab machines are rendering locally and not over the network so couldn't I just disable httpd without turning off these other services that Smoke uses. I realize that I will not be able to access Backburner Manager, but will any other functionality be compromised if I do turn this off?

Thanks for any help!

Best,

Lisa

Hi Lisa.

The Smoke installer does indeed configure the Apache web server and PHP.
This is only used for the Backburner Monitor and the WiretapCentral web apps.

Disabling Apache will not interfere with Smoke's or Backburner's normal operation. You will still be able to import / export media, cache media and generate proxies (all done via backburner), but you won't have the convenience of the BB Monitor to watch these background jobs or to get details about any errors.
You can get basic job info in Smoke's Message Console (click the chevron icon in the lower left corner) or very detailed info, including errors, in Backburner's logs in the /usr/discreet/backburner/Network folder.

Regards,
Robert.
