TIFFs Supers over picture

If I get a simple white title or logo over picture - our GRFX Dept or assistant editors usually delivers that to me as a TIFF with transparency, (coming from a Photoshop source).

When I bring that into Smoke, I get a file with the type over black, and a 2nd file for the alpha channel, So far, so good, right?

When I drop the original on the timeline over picture, it's obviously white type over black. When I add the Soft FX and choose the Matte, it keys out the black, and I see picture behind the type. All good, right? Except that there's a little bit of a harsh edge around the white type.

If I don't do the "Matte", and simply set the Blend mode to Screen, it looks noticeably smoother.

Any reason why that would be?

Screen mode won't work when you have a non white type or logo. So to fix your problem can....
1. Adjust the Blend Curve in the Keyer inside axis. Move the Front left side of the curve all the way to the top.

2. Run your front and matte clips through logic ops inn FX, and choose Divide. This will give you a Fat Key. Or a straight key.

The reason is that the keyers is looking for a umpremultiplied source. In Action there is a divide option in the media list which will eliminate this issue there.

Thanks, Brian.

A Flame op friend also told me about the "Punch Back" Blend mode. Wish that was an option on the timeline. Seems clunky to have to do so much manipulation on a simple title. I guess that's the nature of pre-multiplied source material, eh? Is it possible to export from Photoshop unpremultiplied?

When I get titles as tiff files this is what I do:

Create a white clip. (Or whatever color you need)
Insert on a layer above my main layer.
Turn on soft Axis effect.
Click matte.
Now select the tiff image.
I've had good results with this, and if needed I can tweak anti aliasing, or the key as needed.

But often your text/logo isn't all white. And essentailly you are doing making a 'fat key'.

Thanks, Brian.

I'm digging your articles over at PVC.

Are you teaching at FxPhd for the Spring term?
