Out of interest is anyone out there Pimping their smoke. I am wondering if there are any interesting hacks people are doing to their systems be it hardware or software that improve capability or speed.
We have managed to get projectors working in action but I think thats pretty common.
Have considered SSD raids and dual gfx cards (but apparently not supported by autodesk)
There is a list of supported hardware that we offer.
The high-end graphics cards are quite specific because of the features on the card and what is supported by OS X.
For everything else... CPU/memory/hard-drives/Storage... As I am concerned, the bigger the better.
Loads of people say go for a SSD system disk, max out the memory slots on the MacPro and than the media storage is down to your budget. Fibre attached RAIDs give mad performances but so does thunderbolt these days... so its your choice. It's all about the bandwidth.
Apologies that I can't be more specific but I can't favour one or the other manufacturer etc..
in theory you could add a linux background renderer, which you could also use for wiretap gateway (except for prores) -
this would leave more performance on you "main" mac
but few mac users want linux somewhere around .... ;-)
I wonder if Autodesk will sell Smoke for Linux the way it sells Smoke for Mac... It would be nice if they sold a software only version of the Smoke for Linux, and keep the Flame as a "Premium" turnkey system.
right, 1 burn lic per smokeOnMac - of course you can use both burns with both smacs. license is per workstation not per cpu, so multicores bring additional power here ...
not sure if adsk is selling burn licenses individually ...
