Smoke Education Version - Doc that states limitations?
on Feb 4, 2012 at 10:51:42 pm

Is there a doc from Autodesk that says what the limitations are in the Education version of Smoke for Mac? Another COW member mentioned the AJA Kona won't work with the Education version of Smoke. Thanks!

Hello Mark

The only restrictions in the trial and student versions of Smoke for Mac as compared to the purchased 2012 release are the time limit and the fact that DNxHD export is not allowed.
We don't impose any hardware restrictions based on license, so your Kona card should work.

Thanks for the response. That's great news and encourages me even more to pursue learning Smoke. Autodesk is fantastic for allowing folks like myself to learn this way. :)

My pleasure. Enjoy using Smoke. There are a lot of learning resources on the AREA portal (http://area.autodesk.com/smoke-tutorials) and in the Smoke Learning Channel on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/user/SmokeHowTos), including a video on how to install the student version.

If you run into any issues while installing or starting Smoke, don't hesitate to call us. We offer free installation and startup support to trial and student users.
You can also ask for help on our Facebook page.

I think you need clarification on what Subscription Advantage Packs are.

SAP releases are available only to those who purchase them. Even if you are using the FULL 2012 release or an educational license user, you have to be enrolled in this program to take advantage of new features not included on other releases.

I know you were looking for HDMI output on the KONA 3G.
The Kona 3G works great with Smoke but with SDI OUT ONLY. As far as I know, right now Smoke 2012 and the educational version are not capable of utilizing the HDMI output of the kona 3G.

I do know that Smoke 2012 SAP and Smoke 2012 SAP SP1 do have the capablility of utilizing the HDMI output with the Kona 3G.

The work around is converting the signal (SDI to HDMI, or SDI to DVI) with a miniconverter from AJA or Blackmagic Design for example.

Hey Mike - I understand what you are saying. Anything that was not in the base 2012 release but is in the updates can only be used by folks who are eligible for the updates (via the subscription program). If we're lucky, Smoke 2013 would wrap those features into the 2013 base release.

The version presented to me for download was Smoke for Mac 2012 SP1. I'm not sure what the delta is between that version and the latest version with SAP updates.

I appreciate everyones input. Thanks!

If you have Smoke 2012 SAP SP1 then you should be ok with having the hdmi feature work with the Kona 3G.

If you have smoke 2012 SP1 then hdmi won't work.

Ya, the naming structure in place by Autodesk takes bit getting used to, and can be confusing at times.

Good luck.

Excellent points about the Trial/Student vs SAP, Mike.
Indeed, Trial and Student versions are normally based on the major release and not on SAP releases.
Exceptionally this time around, the current trial is actually based on the SAP build, but the Student version is still 2012 SP1.

Robert.

Hey Robert -

To clarify, even though the 30 day trial and student download are the same physical file, is it the student license activation the prohibits the SAP features (such as Kona 3G HDMI output) from being enabled? Thanks!

Hi Mark.

The trial and student builds are NOT the same file.
The Trial is the 2012 SAP build (with slight changes to disable commercial licensing), while the Student version is the 2012 Service Pack 1 build, which was released a few months before SAP and doesn't include any of the SAP enhancements.

Hope this clarifies things.

Cheers,
Robert.

Hi Robert -

Thanks for the clarification. The reason I thought they were the same is when I downloaded Smoke for Mac and launched it for the first time it asked me if I wanted to use it as a Trial for 30 Days or enter a license. After I entered the license and upon launching it is now branded with "Student Version" - where it wasn't during the time I launched it in trial mode - hence the reason I thought they were one in the same. Thanks gain.

You can use any version in trial mode, but the current Trial version cannot be used in Student or Fully Licensed mode.

Normally, the Trial and Student are just licensing flavors of a major release build. I.e. if you download the 2012 build, you can use it in Trial, Student or Fully Licensed mode, depending on the license you have.

But in this particular case we made the SAP version available as a 30-day trial and that's why the current Student and Trial versions are not the same file.

Robert.
