Color Warper Sluggish - more RAM? any other options?
on Jan 13, 2012 at 11:37:05 pm

Hi all.

I'm a Smoke newbie, and have a Smoke on Mac, running on a 12-core with Quadro 4000, 12 GB RAM, and the Avid Artist Color Panel. I'm quite happy with the performance I'm seeing so far, except when I'm in the Color Warper.

Smoke seems to responds rather sluggishly to both the Control Surface, and the pen/tablet input - the screen updates at 1-2 frames per second at best. I am constantly overshooting and having to dial the correction back.

(usually working with 1080p24, either DPX or ProRes 4x4)

Granted, I know it's not a dedicated grading system like a Resolve, but I was hoping it would at least be as good as Apple Color's realtime response to the color panel input.

So - is there anything that could help? more RAM? how much for HD work? 24? 48?

Or would the FX 4800 perform better?

Any other ideas to try?

(and Autodesk - if the 3 selective corrections could have the option to add a gmask - that would be extremely helpful!)

Thanks for any advice...

Sounds like it could be a driver issue. also the 4000 has known issues with any os that is not 10.6.7

I would also check to make sure you preview mode is set to "realtime" and not "preview fx", I think smoke on Mac defaults to preview fx on new projects

Hi,

I agree with Joel. I have had an Avid Artist Series panel in the past and when working interactively I had to switch from PREVIEWFX to REALTIME in the player.

With PREVIEWFX, the system is constantly caching so that you can preview your FX. In realtime mode, it throws the process on the CPU and gives instant feedback. The results are not cached but this should not be an issue.

Hope this helps.

Grant

YES - Switching from Preview FX to Realtime helped tremendously. Thanks, guys!

Much cheaper than 12 more GB of RAM. ;-)
