paint track and composite

hi,
i have a couple of questions to ask abt the paint track and composite video ( the hat scene) from grants video blog
1. cant we just use the clone tool to remove the hat? why do we need to track and use garbage mask
2. similarly cant we just use the garbage mask tool and adjust the mask frame by frame

I need a link to the video in question, but here is my guess.

1. The clone tool works great if you have 1 frame, but if the scene is moving, and you try and clone each frame by hand... it will look terrible and the video will boil as you can not be pixel accurate doing it by hand frame for frame.

2. you could use a Gmask and hand animate it, but doinf the track allows it to be pixel accurate and faster than doing it by hand.
Each scene is different, and someitme a hand adjustment when something is moving very small amounts or mainly on an X or y axis. Tracking will give you more accurate results.
