Shake is dead. Some people still use it, and I've heard its a good piece of software, but Apple killed it, and is no longer updating it. Take a look at Nuke instead.

AE is a good piece of software. Easy to use, great for title design. Not bad for compositing.

Smoke is a great all around system. Good compositing, color correction, editing. Smoke is geared towards being a "finishing" system. Learning curve can be steep for some people.

Shake 4 is currently EOL'd... therefore it hasn't been developed since 2006. After Effects is a very powerful Motion Graphics and compositing software but it's not an NLE.

The other thing great about Smoke is Action the 3D compositing toolset in Smoke which is like having AE inside Smoke but having true 3D space instead of 2.5D in AE, also having node based creative toolset allows alot of freedom .
