Radeon 8750 eats Quadro 4000????
on Jul 13, 2011 at 3:30:47 pm

Hi,

I just tested the Quadro 4000 on SMAC.

12 core 2,9 gHZ
24 GB Ram

I had a Sequenz with some camera movement, motion blur...etc.. end some rays.
I took to render in HD something about 2 min 50 sec for the Quadro.

I had it just for testing, so I replaced it with my "old" HD 5780, and just did the same rendering.

It took 1 min 40 instead... whoooo...

So.. anyone any similar results?

cheers,

christoph

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of what Nvidia has done withe the Quadro series. They are way overpriced for the amount of horsepower you get. What you are really paying for, are the drivers. (Doesn't make any sense to me.)

Anyway, that being said, I'm not that surprised that a Radeon could beat a Quadro 4000. The quadro 4000 is about the same speed as a quadro 4800 (if not slower), both of which are much slower then the quadro 5800.

It would be interesting to see a in depth review of SMAC running a standard test with different graphics cards.

I totally believe that a Radeon could beat a Quadro but, if I understand your methodology correctly, there might have been something cached from the first render. For a purely scientific analysis, I would suggest doing what you did already but then rendering a new sequence with the Radeon, switch the cards again and then render the same sequence with the with Quadro.

Not a big deal, really. Regardless of price/performance it's probably not a good idea to deviate from the supported configuration. It would be cool to know if Smoke could reliably run on an iMac, though.

Hi Greg,

first I rendered it with the Radeon, than I replaced the Board and renderd it - no cache, new action mode, same settings - with the quadro. It was slower. I did this 2 times with each card, alsways the same results.

Did I miss the magic "activate cuda" button on smoke?

It was a brand new installation - new OS 10.6.7 - new Cuda, new certified qaudro driver...etc....

hmmmm....

I was trying to figure out how much additional CPUs help SMAC. Does the GPU do the majority of the rendering?

I was just told by someone from Autodesk that the GPU technology in Smoke is CUDA based. If that's correct how can your AMD Radeon 5780 be utilized in Smoke for GPU based rendering?

Smoke has been updated to work with Radeon. I don't know what the performance differences are though. I can't seem to find a lot of information. I noticed on my 12 core mac doing renders in Smoke barely even touched the CPUs.

Does Smoke support both CUDA and another GPU rendering technology. I don't understand.

I believe in a recent update, Autodesk added support for the Radeon series GFX cards.

IMHO, the Radeon cards have more power then the Quadro 4000, if you are just looking at the hardware of the two cards. The whole point of the Quadro series, is that you are getting better drivers for professional applications. BUT, I've heard Apple and Nvidia dont get along much, so that could be a reason why the performance for the Quadro isn't where it should be.

Does Smoke use OpenCL or OpenGL?

[Andrae Palmer] "Does Smoke use OpenCL or OpenGL?"

It's not likely OpenCL, as the Quadro 4000 drivers are not OpenCL-ready.

But I keep wondering why these simple questions regarding graphics cards seem so hard to get solid, assured answers for?

Since I am on a MacPro2,1 – which isn't compatible with any of the nVidia Quadro series cards as I understand it, will I need to get an entirely new box in order to run Smoke?

I have heard some reports of the ATI Radeon HD 5770 working with early Macs (specifically 2,1). Would that be an acceptable system for Smoke.

Thanks,
Ron

Here is the official word:

Looks like Cuda doesn't help much for Smoke on Mac...
