EDL Framerate
on Apr 16, 2011 at 6:05:37 am

I am having some diffuculty conforming EDLs in smoke.

When I conform, sometimes I have to convrt them from 29.97 to 23.97 to get the to work. but it's frustrating not knowing when to click that option. it either works or it doesn't.

My question is, by looking at the edl in emacs or vi... How do you tell if it's 29.97 or 23.97? If I knew by looking at the EDL, I would know when to convert, nopt just trial and error.

Thanks

When looking at an edl, its not to difficult to spot the framerate.

If any timecodes go above 24/25 frames in the actual timecode than the framerate must be 29.97.

Simple logic I guess....

Actually there is nothing in an EDL that conclusively indicates frame rate. Sure, if you have any event with a time code with frames over 25, then that is 29.97. But the absence of any frame over 25 is no guarantee that it is 29.97 fps.

A word with the editor helps. EDLs take on the fps of the source used for editing. And the editor will know the source.

FCP outputs an EDL bearing the fps of the sequence and the editor will know the sequence settings.

Avid EDLs take the project fps as their fps, so here too the editor will know.
