Autodesk Smoke 2010 Mac won't start
on Dec 26, 2010 at 11:35:20 pm

I have spent two days trying to understand the problem. This is a summary of what I have come up with: To start Smoke you must have a proper internet connection, which for Smoke means that you need a static IP address. Check with your service provider to verify that you do.

For known bugs and fixes to go:
http://download.autodesk.com/us/systemdocs/pdf/smoke2010macosx_fixed_known_...

I did have Smoke running, then I change two things:
1. I updated my Mac OS to 10.6.5 from the previous version.
2. I changed my Internet provider:

When I previously used an AirPort router with an AT&T DSL connection everything worked fine. Then I changed to a very inexpensive but very fast TimeWarner Cable connection. Smoke failed to start at this point. TimeWarner said that for residential service they have a dynamic IP address which changes every 7 to 10 hours. My only option with them is to change to their commercial account.

Here are the error messages when I was connected to TimeWarner Cable:
Error acquiring host information for cpe-XX-XXX-XXX-X: Unknown host.
No servers are available for this framestore client.
ERROR: VOLUMEMGT : Failed to initialize Stone+Wire connection.

Then I did a fresh install with the Internet unplugged and had different but similar errors:
Unable to connect to framestore map server localhost: Host is down.
No servers are available for this framestore client.
ERROR: VOLUMEMGT : Failed to initialize Stone+Wire connection.

As a check other problems I manually reset the permissions using the terminal as other posts suggested: no luck.

If you are using AirPort then call Apple and talk to a service tech and have them set your router to a static IP address. I still have a question regarding this because it has been suggested that a router can have a static IP address but the Internet provider may still use a dynamic IP address.

To restate I did have Smoke opening but when I changed my Internet service from AT&T DSL using an AirPort router to TimeWarner Cable I was no longer able to open the program.
