Smoke or eQ

We are at a point of switching from a system, so I have some questions.
We now running a 844/X from Media 100(10 bit D5 4:4:4:4) and we're looking to Smoke on Linux or eQ from Quantel.
I saw in the white papers of Discreet that Smoke on Linux is 8 bit, but is this a step back in quality if you compare it with 844/X?
What is the price range from Smoke on Linux?

Is there somebody who has some experience with both systems or can you give some pro's and cons of those systems?
Thanks

Have a Look at Mistika its awesome. If you are not spefifict to discreet or quantel then I would suggest Mistika on Linux

Its a far better system but less known worldwide. http://www.mistika.tv

Hi James

We have an 844/X XE with xblur ( shame a good company didnt buy the technology as it still shxxs all over everything else in terms of processing power)
We bought a Smoke after evaluating systems.
We were just not convinced about quantels future and their roadmap for their products, is it news rooms, is it DI.

We looked at what our clients wanted and most of them wanted their finished pieces in a Discreet system ( or should i say autodesk media and entertainment?)
We looked at billing and we could bill more for discreet systems.

We also got a sneek preview of Smoke 7 and the new features are good in terms of editing
The power of the system is very very good. Get a Demo

The systems are rock solid reliable, apart from set-up which takes a while

It also opened up doors for us in terms of directors off lining at home on FCP and taking the files into smoke to finish

8 bit RGB versus 10 bit YUV which is what the 844/x is. Smoke is also HD unlike the 844, damn optibase
Smoke is held back by drivers on the linux platform which are being developed

It's certainly the nicest interface I've worked with (Lightworks comes a second)

WOW! PAUL!

It's not often you see xomeone mention Lightworks in a post.
Our Smoke is 2 years old now and love it even with it's flaws. And we still have a Lightworks VIP edit system. The thing won't die.

Love Smoke... Love the Lightworks.
