Multi Codec Format Projection Sotware???s
on Jan 5, 2010 at 5:16:35 pm

I am technical director/production manager for several film festivals and I am seeking some input.

I have currently moved to a full hard drive system for full HD projection (with of course backups in DVD and tape formats).

The issue I have run into.. I cannot find a good multi monitor control software that plays the ProRes442 codecs in QT movies.

For example.. I have 200 short films that I set on a cue list. They have come to me in MANY different formats.( DVD. mpeg2 mov fla). But the software that I have tried has not been able to show the FCP PROres codec in .mov format. I can convert it to a mpeg2 file and no problems.

Soo one question is .. Does the conversion to a mpeg2 package change the codec excessively? In most of my venues you can ACTUALLY SEE very little difference. But I am looking to promote filmmakers and editors in the best light possible and would love to be able to screen their films in the codec of their choice. Plus it is an extra hassle for all concerned to not go through an extra step.

So my question?
Is there a software program that converts PRORes mov to a HIGH QUALITY mpeg2 package.??

if not .
Is there a software program that can play ProRes mov and (of course ALL other industry standards) with full control?? ( and please don't tell me QT)

I am looking for quality software only.. any suggestions??

You might check out Playback Pro -- it's a full-featured, Quicktime-based software DDR, which was written by a video engineer.

I should have said I need a more open platform.

I have winXp ,vista, and win7, linux, and Mac machines.

[duprelon tizdale] "I have winXp ,vista, and win7, linux, and Mac machines. "

Then ProRes is not for you -- it's Mac/Windows only.

You could transcode your ProRes movies to MPEG2 with Compressor (ships with Final Cut Studio on a Mac) or another conversion program like Episode, Squeeze, or ProCoder.

Do you have the ProRes decoder for Windows installed? It's not included with the standard Quicktime installation, and must be downloaded separately from Apple.

With that QT component installed, anything that uses the Quicktime libraries should be able to read your ProRes files.
