Footage flickers on TV palyback
on Sep 28, 2011 at 12:14:32 pm

Hi, I am using the old Adobe Video Collection Bundle with Encore 1.5 and Premiere pro 1.5 ( purchased in 2006 ) I have just completed a Wedding, edited in Premiere Pro and then exported the files to Movie Microsoft DV Avi , I then import the files as assets into Encore and Build Project - Make Dvd Disc. When I play the Dvd back on Tv the footage flickers a lot, especially on footage shot outside and when any pan and zoom movement occurs.
I let Premiere Pro and Encore determine the transcode settings as I am baffled by which options to choose.
Is there any simple guide to follow for burning to Dvd to remove or reduce this flicker
Thanks
Michael

Your post lacks crucial info:

What is the format of you footage?
What frame rate was your footage shot?
Interlaced or progressive?

What are your encode settings in Encore b/4 you import your AVI?

exported the files to Movie Microsoft DV Avi

Why are you doing this?
Can't you export straight to Adobe Media Encoder from the APP sequence?
I don't know if you can w/ older version.

Hi Chris
Sorry for being so vague, I hope the following is the info you are after -

The footage was shot in SD Pal 16:9, 25 fps using a Sony Hvr Z1,
I am not certain if it was interlaced or progressive - when I check the properties of the captured file in APP is states Interleave 1: 24.05

The Transcode,I assume this is the same as encode settings in Encore are -
Pal Dv High quality 4mb VBR 2 Pass

Video Summary:
Codec: MainConcept MPEG Video
Quality: 5.0 (high quality)
Frame Rate [fps]: 25
Field Order: Lower
Bitrate Encoding: VBR, 2 Pass
Minimum Bitrate [Mbps]: 1.5000 (low quality)
Target Bitrate [Mbps]: 4.0000 (low quality)
Maximum Bitrate [Mbps]: 9.0000 (high quality)
M Frames: 3
N Frames: 12

Audio Summary:
Audio Format: Dolby
Codec: Dolby Digital
Audio Layer: Dolby Digital Stereo
Bitrate [kbps]: 192
Frequency: 48 kHz

I have no idea why I have been exporting the files to Movie Microsoft DV Avi but have been doing so from day one for some reason, obviously now I realise I should have been exporting directly to Adobe Media Encoder from the APP sequence which I can do in this older version.
In the Encoder I assume I would use the MPEG 2 - DVD format and it then gives the following options
PAL DV 16:9 Low Quality - 3MB VBR 1PASS
- 3MB VBR 2PASS
- 4MB VBR 1PASS
- 4MB VBR 2PASS
- 6MB VBR 1PASS
- 6MB VBR 2PASS
I am unsure of which to choose?
The Dvd looks fine apart from the flickering in the background, walls, ground, car roofs etc
Any advice would be appreciated

The flickering will happen with SD-DV on small details. You can minimize them by encoding at the best quality.

Export to AME from the APP Sequence:

Some of this depends on your program length. The longer the video the lower the data rate needs to be to fit on the disc and play smooth.

Use best quality
