PAL and NTSC video formats on single Worldwide playable DVD
on Jul 27, 2011 at 3:35:53 pm

Hi All,

My first post - hello!

I'm new to encore and DVD authoring but have many years experience in After effects, 3d, editing etc.

I've read a lot about this but can't quite find the correct response.

I need to create a playable DVD that can be put in any DVD player or computer and played world wide.

The DVD will need to contain various videos, lets say 3 for this example. I have all the source movies ready to go but all are in different formats.

Video 1: PAL Progressive 720x576 @ 25fps
Video 2: HTSC Interlaced 720x486 @ 29.97fps
Video 3: HDTV Progressive 1920x576 @ 25fps

Most videos I will be adding will be PAL Progressive 720x576 @ 25fps.

I have access to AE CS4 and Encore CS4. But could buy conversion software if needed.

Obviously I want them to retain as much quality as possible.

My question is: How do I get all of these on one worldwide playable DVD with a simple designed menu?

Thanks in advance.

John,
if your DVD should play worldwide, you need to go NTSC, because PAL-video will not be played on NTSC-player, but NTSC will be played on PAL-player and HD wont be played on SD-players.

so your way is NTSC.

Thanks Danny that's great, NTSC it is.

Does that mean I need to concert all non NTSC videos to 29.97fps before beginning to author the DVD through encore?

If so, exactly what format do all videos need to converted to .eg frame rate, dimensions, progressive/interlaced, quicktimes format?

Which software is this best done in, or can encore simply import and convert on the fly if I use a NTSC setup?

Thanks for your help.

john,
all assets must be NTSC, that means 720x480 in NSTC-aspec-ratio. if you have some PAL-stuff the best way to go is:

1. deinterlace to PAL 25p
2. conform to 24p
3. encode to NTSC 24p - in fact it will be encoded to 29.98NDF, that means you´ll have 24p with 3:2-pulldown for 29.98.

please keep in mind, that if you have HD interlaced source your NTSC-MPEG2 needs to have the same field-order.

mostly NTSC is lower field first, if you have straight NTSC-material, but if you have interlaced HD-material you need to encode it upper first.

cheers
