Movie Segments cause naviagation problems
on May 18, 2011 at 10:11:06 am

I wanted to see if this is a limitation of Encore CS4 or if there was a fix for this.

I have a film.

I know it's going to be a dual-layer disc, so I chop up the film into chapters/sections and in Encore the End Action of chapter 1 is the start of chapter 2, end of chapter 2 is the start of chapter 3, and so on. I do this because it helps IMGBURN obtain a cleaner layer-break.

But what I'm having troubles with is the navigation on the disc. The user can skip forward / fast-forward chapter-by-chapter, but it's impossible to skip backwards or fast-rewind.

Is there a way to do this, or can someone suggest a better workflow?

Many thanks,
Clint

If your chapter videos are in separate timelines, then the skip forward/backward navigation is completely dependent on what the individual DVD player will allow.

You may have better luck with the navigation issue if you add your chapter timelines to a standard playlist. En *may* program the commands differently enough in the playlist so that navigation is easier for the DVD player. I haven't tested that particular feature for your kind of navigation in a very long time. :-)

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the reply. In your experience, is the Standard Playlist way pretty well supported in DVD players?

Would this be the same if the disc was a Blu-ray?

How do you handle the layer-break issue with very long films?

Thanks again,
Clint

I don't have enough experience with Blu-ray to comment on how well it's supported, but standard playlists in En are usually well-supported on DVD players.

For the layer break, I make a set of DVD folders in En and then let ImgBurn make a disc image out of those folders. The layer break that's set in ImgBurn is usually reliable.

Do you usually segment the video so there are lots of layer-break choices in IMGBURN, or do you do one long video stream?

Thanks again Jeff, I'm going to try the Playlist way to see if the navigation problem is fixed.
