I'm doing a project in Encore CS2 with subtitles and found out that the subtitle quality is very very poor. I'm not sure if that's caused by Encore or if it's a common problem with dvd subtitles. I'm using Arial Narrow 42 pt. Since the videobackground is white I tried normal 'white' titles with a black medium outline, but also black titles without outline. The last option looked the best, but I would like to have the quality way way better. Is there anyone who can advise me in this? Should I use another fonts, different size, color etc.? I've a tight deadline so any help is very very welcome!
It's a common problem with subtitles. They're limited to the same color palette and restrictions that subpicture highlights are. 2-bit color and no anti-aliasing or effects like drop-shadows.
Worst quality comes from pure colors and pure white/black combinations.
Use the Timeline Color Set function to add additional subtitle color layers to the subtitles to try and make your text look better. In the color set dialog these additional layers are called Stroke and Anti-Alias. Just be aware that it's not true Stroke or Anti-Alias like you'd get in Photoshop.
