DVD not recognized by duplicator
on May 13, 2009 at 4:23:49 pm

This was my first project with Encore and everything went smoothly until I burned the disc and tried to put it in a duplicator to make several copies. I did make sure the copy protection was off. I checked the project and no issues came up.
The DVD plays fine in a DVD player, buttons work, etc., but the duplicator doesn't recognize it as a valid disc. Is Encore not "finalizing" the disc when it's finished or is is somthing else that's keeping it from being recognized? The duplicator is a Primera Bravo Pro.

How much content is on the disc?

Under an hour. I transcoded it at 4mb VBR 2 pass.

Sorry I wasn't clearer, I meant how much data is written on the disc?

That should be enough data (I've heard reports that this happens when data is 1 GB or less).

Which disc format did you burn to?

That's fine quality. I'm guessing that somehow it's not being properly closed by Encore.

There are a couple of avenues you may want to try - one would be to build a DVD folder and use ImgBurn (freeware) to burn it using the same brand of DVD-R and try this with your duplicator. Another would be to try burning a DVD+R instead, and see if that works on the duplicator's system.

So do I still use Encore to set up the disc and export the file to ImgBurn?

Use Encore to build a DVD folder (you can do this in the Build panel), and then use the folder as the source for ImgBurn.

I've recently posted an article on my blog which addresses common problems with dvd burning.

Read it here:

http://precomposed.com/blog/2009/05/successful-burning/

Your quality of media seems to be good, and since the problem is the Bravo Pro machine not recognizing the disc properly, the booktype shouldn't be an issue. It's possible you are burning too fast. My article covers this in detail, but you should be burning at no faster than 4X.

Just out of curiosity, did you modify the booktype on the disc you burned for the Bravo Pro?

Hi Jon, thanks for your help! But, I'm not sure what you mean by "modify the booktype"

I just read your article, so I have an idea of how to change the booktype. Thanks Jon, I'll let you know how it turns out.

The reason I mentioned the booktype, is that I'm not sure how the Primera Bravo Pro device would handle it if you did in fact change it. If you are placing DVD+R media into your Bravo Pro, then it will burn it as a DVD+R (i'm not sure if you can modify the booktype with that device). So just to be clear, I don't think changing the booktype to DVD-ROM will help your situation, since the Bravo Pro device was designed to read burned media.

My first suggestion would be to burn at a slower speed (4x)

If that doesn't work, my next suggestion would be to do what the others suggested and build a folder with encore, and use ImgBurn to burn the disc (at 4X of course). Building an image instead of a folder may work as well.
