Can't import H.264
on Oct 15, 2007 at 4:21:49 pm

I have an H.264 file that I created using Procoder 3.0 that I'm trying to import into Encore and it's not letting me import it. It shows up gray and unimportable when I go to import it. Anybody have any idea?

Thanks,

Alex

Which version of Encore are you using?

Please provide more detail about the file: its extension, encoding parameters, etc.

The file is an .h264. I'm on an apple and in the finder it says it's a Unix Executable file. The paramaters I set in Procoder were pretty basic and I tried it as a raw H.264 and using an MPEG stream.

Try setting the extension to .mp4.

If it still doesn't import, or has to be re-transcoded, I would suggest more details on encode settings from Procoder.

It didn't open still, so here are the settings from Procoder:

Stream Type: I tried both MPEG 2 Stream and Raw H.264
Video PID 2064
Audio PID 2068

Profile High
Livel 4.1
Size of Coded Video 33
Number of B-Pict 2
1280x720
16:9
Non-Interlaced
CBR 1 Pass
Bitrate 8000 KBPS
Reference Frames: 4
Search Shape 8x8
Entropey Code CABAC
All Checked:
Uses Fast inter and intra decision
Uses Hadamard Transfer

Motion Estimation: Quarter Pixel

Checked:
Write Timestamp
Write Acces Unit Delimiters
Write Sequence end code

That's all. Thanks a lot.

Alex

I assume you were able to select the file in the Import dialog, but it failed to import.

Was there an error dialog of any kind?

Actually, I can't even get it to try and import. When I go to select it in import, either as an asset or timeline, it shows up as gray (unselectable). In the finder, it says it's a unix executable file. Very, very weird to me.

Whoops, not mp4. Try the .m4v extension...does it import now?

Encore will see it if I change the extention to .m4v, but then I get the error message that it the codec isn't loaded. If it accepts .h264, why would I need to change the extention to something else?

I'm doing lots of experimenting for this, and I'm finding that a lot of files when I try to import them, including some quicktime files, tell me the codec isn't loaded. Is there a way to load these codecs one by one into a foldier or something so that this will be enabled?

Thanks,

Alex

Yes and no. What I've discovered is that Encore is very finicky about the types of files it will take. You have to use Premiere's export to Encore function to do the H.264 mpeg4 file type. This is an excellent encoder which is basically Main Concept's encoder.

The only other software I found that would create a file that could be opened as that type was Sorenson Squeeze and Telestream Episode, but Encore wants to transcode both and can't read the proper aspect ratio from the file from Sorenson. Make sure you've downloaded the latest Encore and Premiere updates as a new once came out on the sixth. Procoder's H.264 file is useless for this.

It will take an HD MPEG2 from Sorenson and recognize it properly and not transcode it if you should need that.

thanks, this all came about I re-exported my movie out of AE as the mp4 - that total file size is 2.5G -and its good quality so I figured Encore wouldn't have an issue with it.

I also have a full res. quicktime (animation codec) file which will import into encore but once encore tries to transcode it freezes. I figured it was because this file is 90GB... so now I'm trying the mp4 but that would import either, but I'll try the updates.
