Non playing DVDs - any ideas
on Dec 1, 2006 at 7:11:23 pm

Hi all,
i've put a DVD together for a client and it all looks great, burnt to disk and it plays on my PC and the DVD player in the lounge but my client is having all sorts of trouble. I've used two different brands of -R DVDs; they'll play on their PC and set top but not on their Mac. I've tried using + R's and they won't play at all. But all 3 disks play perfectly on my equipment and my cheap-as-chips set top player. Any ideas as to what to try next? Anything i'm missing?
Thanks,
Tim Bond

Here's a link to a Mac DVD FAQ in the Adobe Encore forum. It makes for good reading.

Hi Jeff,
Yep that was interesting. I'll let my client know. Is it possible to RIP my DVD on a Mac then reburn it to produce a Mac playable DVD? That will also play on PC's and Set-tops?
Thanks,
Tim

I'm not a wishmaster :)

How you create DVD-Video disk:
- MPEG2 Encoder ?
- Writing to disk - software?
- Disk - manufacturer?
- DVDRecorder's name, speed, settings?
- Win Version?
- AE version?

For 100000% compability need to do this:
1. create an image file of project
2. set DVD-ROM book-type to your recoder by IMGBurn software
3. write to disk by IMGBurn software

thats all....:)

Hi,
I'm editing in PPro and export to AVI - Procoder AVI to MPEG - MPEG into Encore for DVD creation with some editing in Photoshop.

So are you saying basically:
1. from encore build to image file.
2. burn image with another, 3rd party, application - i've got Nero 6 (would that work? Or does it have to be IMGBurn?)

Not sure what you mean by 'book-type'?

Thanks,
Tim Bond

/* burn image with another, 3rd party, application - i've got Nero 6 (would that work? Or does it have to be IMGBurn?) */

http://www.imgburn.com/
ImgBurn is software for recording any types DVD-Video to disks (dvd5/9, image or VIDEO_TS folder)
Nero6 CAN NOT write images RIGHT..... so...

/* Not sure what you mean by 'book-type'? */
book-type "tells" to dvd-player what kind of disk is inserted - DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-ROM, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL.
No all players can play +R or -R disks, but all can play DVD-ROM (by book-type, not by media)
+R and +R DL disks can be written with setting DVD-ROM and be playabe on all players (my last test - OOOLD LG player can play +R DL disk).

and, ImgBurn is free!

Hi,
Bit of clarification - i've burnt an image with IMGBurn to a DVD+R. With DVD Decrypter the info says the Physical Format (ADIP) disk book type is DVD+R and that the Physical Format (Last Recorded) is DVD-ROM. So do i have a DVD-ROM now?
Thanks,

Do you see right/down combobox "Write Speed"?
Right - button "book"
click on it, or menu->tools->drive->change book type
select you recorder model and setting for DVD+R to DVD-ROM

Hi,
I have a Pioneer DVR-111L which, aparently now having done a firmware update, defaults to DVD-ROM with +R disks with most burning apps - so it does not appear in the DVD writer list in IMGBurn. I'm going to get the copies done by another company anyway so i'll see if they can burn from an ISO as opposed to a master disk. Do you recomend a DVD writer that will allow me to change book types?
Thanks,

My NEC-3551 can change book-type setting.

You can see list of drives in program and try to find listed model.

Pioneer/Asus (IMHO) can only set book type to "+R DL" as "DVD-ROM"
