Camera upgrade advice
on Feb 20, 2012 at 12:39:04 am

I'm looking to upgrade from SD (Sony PD 170) to HD and I've been researching the:
Sony - FS 100 or EX1R
Panasonic HPX 250 and, HVX 370, 500
Canon 5D.

My work consist of commercial, interviews, wedding, and other live events.
I'm expanding into corporate video and music videos and documentary.
I have a total budget of $15K, your advice is greatly appreciated.

I've had a Sony EX-1 for a few years. It's a great go to camera.

But if I were to buy another camera, it would be the Panasonic AF-100 and some lenses.

Stay away from the 5D since you have the budget for a real video camera with the options and controls. The AF-100 will give you the DSLR look with the video features. Plus the 5D has a limitation of around 12 minutes of recording time before you have to push the button again. Not good for long seminar type corporate work.

Thank you Brent I appreciate you're advice I've been reading every review and comparison I could find over the weekend. I will definitely take a look at it.

The Zacuto shootout 2011 tested both the AF-100 and the Canon 5D.

But, 'ware the bokeh on those large-sensor cams! Kiss deep DOF goodbye (unless you are in bright light)

I know someone who uses the Panny AG-HPX250 and loves it. But, you will be stuck with one lens. And I hear it is not as good in low light as other Pannys.

If you fret about chromatic aberration (as do I, even though I can not afford cams that don't have CA), have a look at this: AG-HPX500 P2 HD - but that is a massive rig.
