According to a video (on newsshooter dot com) of a Sony engineer at IBC 2016, the new 18-110 lens is parfocal, but only with the assistance of the autofocus.

What does that mean?

It's standard operating procedure to zoom in, focus, then zoom out and reframe. Let's say you focus on the nearest eye of your subject, who is working in a lab with lots of beakers and glass tubes. I don't see how, after zooming out and reframing, the autofocus would be able to guess that you want to maintain focus on the nearest eye of the person you're filming, and not, for example, the glassware through which you're framing the subject.

Am I missing something here?

EDIT: after a resounding silence here, I took this question over to the Cinematography forum on the COW, where Gary Huff gave me a great answer.

Can you add the link to the discussion in Cinematography? I tried searching for it but can't find it.
I am also having issues with the 18-110 lens; I was told my Sony that it is not a parfocal lens and they don't market it as such, but there is a lot of discussion that it is.
