SONY PXW-70 XAVC to NLE?

I'm new to this camera and format and would like to know if anyone has been successful with importing the XAVC-long GOP files. This camera's XAVC codec is different from XAVC-intra and unless things have changed recently, the files don't open in NLE's like AVID, Premiere, FCP and Sony Vegas. Last time I looked, Sony's catalyst wasn't helping with XAVC-long GOP files either. I've read where someone was using their Sony Alpha XAVC-Long GOP / MP4 wrapper files in Sony Vegas Pro 13 without problem but the PXW-X70 uses a MXF wrapper. Checked the SVP forum on Sony website and PXW-X70 users are still having issues, even with firmware updates.

I mostly use Sony Vegas Pro but am starting more collaborations on Premiere.

Anyone have any solutions?

Thanks!

[Chas Smith] "NLE's like AVID, Premiere, FCP" if you mean FCPX all three NLEs are now supported.

Good to know! What about Sony Vegas Pro 13? I know some folks using the Sony Alpha say they're able to use XAVC but it's a MP4 wrapper ...the PXW-X70 is MXF wrapper and no one on the Sony website forum seems to be able to import to Sony Vegas Pro 13, even with camera update.

XAVC Long GOP .mxf files are, strictly speaking, supported in Vegas Pro 13 (latest build only) but there is a bug that affects X70 files. Catalyst can be used to convert until this is fixed. Otherwise you are good to go with latest versions of Avid, FCP and Premiere. Note that with Avid you need to Sony XAVC/XDCAM AMA plugin.

Thanks for your post. BTW, I wrote to Sony asking about the XAVC-Long Gop / MXF issue and below is what they wrote back, indicating that the issue has been addressed.:

Thank you for contacting Sony Creative Software.

Yes, Vegas Pro 13 should be able to read XAVC-Long GOP files from the PXW-X70. You may see some conflicting information on this topic because the X70 previously had a problem with its firmware that caused XAVC-L files to record improperly, making them unusable in Vegas. This has since been resolved by a camera firmware update, which I strongly recommend you apply. Vegas Pro 13 has also received a recent update to allow it to read the problem files created by the X70 before its firmware update, so you should be covered on both fronts.

I recommend downloading the full-featured free trial of any software you’re interested in buying prior to making a purchasing decision. The free trial will allow you to evaluate the software for 15 days and ensure it meets your needs and runs on your system before you place an order.

Sincerely,

Guy D.

Having the same problem. I am using CS6. Guess I have to update to CC! Also, I tried using Catalyst Browser, but it did not work. Tried to convert mxf to mp4. Not sure if I am using it properly?

yes, XAVC requires Adobe CC. you can use Catalyst to convert but you are better off converting to ProRes or XDCAM.

Thanks. I will have to go to CC. I have Catalyst, but I can't convert files with it. Not sure why it doesn't work.
