Question about Sony FS700 and CineGammas & Knee
on Jun 17, 2013 at 3:23:45 am

Is it better to use CineGammas than to use knee? I read somewhere that when pushing dynamic range Cinegammas are more subtle then knee. If this is true how is knee disabled is this done automatically when switching over to CineGamma or by setting it to mode/automatic or selecting mode/manual and then leaving it at it's default settings which I'm assuming is Point 90% Slope 0? I use Cinegammas most of the time and then make fine adjustments in knees when needed.

Alister Chapman is your man for this. See his site, he's the Sony 'go to man'.

Yes Mr. Alister is a wonderful source of info, I visit his site regularly and I've once did a workshop with him. Unfortunately I did not find the answer I'm looking for on his website. I'll post the question on his site and hopefully he'll have the time to answer it. thanks again.

Cinegammas have progressive highlight compression which in my opinion looks nicer and more film like than a conventional knee. The only very slight issue is that to get this gentle roll-off the compression starts quite low down the exposure range, around the 70% point depending on which cinegamma (same for hypergammas). As a result you need to be careful with skin tone exposure as if you compress skin tones it is noticeable. So keep an eye on your exposure levels and keep faces below 70% for the best looking images.
