PMW EX1R unaccessable?
on Oct 24, 2012 at 5:16:19 pm

I'm new here so first of: I'm a 34 year old video fan who's trying to get into documentaries.

To do this I got myself a PMW EX1R (second-hand). I've got 1 SxS 16GB card with it and i've filmed a few things that i want to import to my PC.

That's not working right now.

Ive got a regular 4 pin Firewire cable and an adaptor cable so a 4 pin firewire connector goes to an USB. Neither gives me any love.

The regular firewire cable prompts windows to ask me whether or not i'd like to start adobe premiere or onlocation to get to the video files. but that doesnt work either. In these programs the mediabrowsers do not show any external disk with content on it.

The USB adaptor gets a reaction from windows but windows say there was an error installing the Device to USB. It said that USB device was broken or not installable.

All in all the cam doesnt seem browsable...

any ideas?

Did you get an operations manual with your 2nd hand camera? If not you can get an online manual in PDF format from the various Sony web sites.

First off, I want to be clear that I'm not a Windows user, however there are similarities between platforms.

The firewire port (iLINK HDV/DV) is not for transferring files. It's only used to record HDV to another device such as an HDV camera or similar. The USB port is the only way to transfer files using the camera.

You need a Windows program to recognize the clips and to work with them. It's called Clip Browser and you can find it here:

It's free and comes with an instruction manual as well as the program. You'll find the correct software for your application on the page listed above. Look for "XDCAM Browser Ver 2.0 for Win"

And here's a link to the EX1R operation manual:

If anyone knows of a newer Clip Browser version please add to this thread.

Good Luck
