I don't know the first thing about the 500 (wish I did) but if you have a camera USB file transfer port that can be hooked up to your laptop try doing a straight file copy from the camera to your external LaCie. If your LaCie rugged is like mine you've probably got FW800 and are using that from the laptop. See if the laptop's estimated copy time is less than 3 hrs. It should be far less, because a simple USB connection copying to a SATA internal drive is about 28 min. for 64 Gbytes. Don't expect that kind of transfer tiime going from USB to FW800 but it shouldn't even be close to 3 hrs.

If this setup I've recommended you try is faster, then it's just a process of elimination as to where the restriction is within your regular file transfer routine.

I too don't know the 500 but can say that downloading BPAV files from a full S X S 16 GB card from my EX 1 takes about 13 minutes. I hook up USB to my MacBook and take the files straight through the computer to a drive connected to the MacBook by firewire 800. 64 GB's then would take about one hour, not three.

Had the same trouble. Solved by putting UDF SxS driver from Sony site on the MacPro I was using. Camera is superb.

Ah ! some light in the tunnel..!! what was the driver? I was told there was no driver needed in the computer when using the ext card reader.. were you using the 17inch MBP with the slot?
Yes nice camera.. the viewfinder was a bit disappointing.. same as the HDCAM /800 series but not very good.. I was told the encoding from camera to viewfinder was "cheap" and so the quality not great.

But besides that yes really liked the camera.. quite light, easy on batteries, easy menu.. small -ish but not a toy camera..
