Anyone have any experience going from an EX-1 to an F3?

Out of the box - no external recorders - Kit Lenses - what were your impressions?

I have the EX3 and F3 and they work very well together, you will need to spend time working with the picture profiles on each to find a god color match.

Good Luck

Thanks... I'm much more interested to hear from your experience whether the upgrade is worth it.

I probably won't be using both cameras at the same time so matching them is less of an issue.

I know it's much better in low light and the DOF is much more shallow. Other than those, how does the picture compare?

[Andrew Wilson] "Other than those, how does the picture compare?"

Where does one start? There are many differences:

70% less picture noise than the EX1/EX3. With the optional S-Log gamma curves you'll get 12 stops of latitude, previously unheard of at this price. I think the EX1/EX3 gets you about 7 stops, almost one more if you shoot at minus 3 gain and adjust the picture profile to take advantage of the extra latitude available.

For more info on the F3 in real world applications go to Alister Chapman's web site:

Oh sorry I thought you actually knew the difference between the quality of the two units. The F3 is amazing just like when the EX1 came out, but these sensors are worlds apart. If you actually have the resources for the F3 run to a dealer don't walk. I also purchased the lens set and they are well worth it. The F3 is simply a great low price professional digital cinema camera from Sony.

Good Luck

Michael, do you record to the EX codec internally or are you using an outboard recording device? If so, are you using S-log?

Ours just arrived with the Sony primes. Looking at recorder options.

So far, I've shot our Pug and the wife feeding her fish.

Hi Steve. I'm very curious to find out which recorder you go with. Lots of options out now and It'll probably double at NAB. Do you plan on getting the S-log option? What do you think of the new 14x servo lens?

I always record redundently to the camera and to the Nano Flash (100 Mbps) and it does the bulk of my work but yes I want a 10 bit recorder when I purchase the S-log key. I loaded a friend's S-log key a few weeks ago and did some very simple tests, this is deffinately another level up. I really love the idea of the Gemini 4 4 4 but these files are gigantic and the type of gigs I do haven't warranted it. I'm waiting to hear more about the Samurai as it is very small like my trusty Nano's.

Good Luck

Hi;

I'm just drooling over the F3, even though it is $15K more than I can afford!

I assume you have watched this series - I learned a LOT watching it.

When they did this camera test the Slog wasn't available for the F3 yet, so it would be good to see the 2012 shootout.

Good Luck

My friend Doug Jensen at Vortex media has created a disk of original camera footage using the F-3 and Slog with a number of external recorders. He compares the footage from the SxS card EX codec and the various recorders so you can make your own judgements about image quality and workflow.
