Inserting SXS Pro Card Crashes Macbook Pro Running Mac OS 10.6.8
on Oct 31, 2011 at 2:58:46 pm

Hello,

I have a Sony PMW-EX1, and I downloaded drivers from their website onto my Macbook Pro running Mac OS 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).

As soon as I insert an SXS Pro Card into the Mac, it crashes (a Gray Screen wipes down from the top, telling me to Restart... and I have to hold down the Power Button to do so).

The version of XDCAM Transfer I am using is: 2.12.0
The version of XDCAM Browser is: 1.3
I downloaded and installed:
SXS Device Driver v1.0.52020 and
SXS UDF Driver Software (No version No.)
XDCAM EX Log and Transfer Plugin for FCP Verion 1.2

Additionally, when I invoke XDCAM Transfer, I get an error Msg saying that "XDCAM Drive Software" wasn't found.

Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
Raj

I had a colleague with this problem on her older 15" Macbook Pro. The issue is (and you've already discovered this) that the various Sony transfer/browser apps cannot find the driver software even though it's installed. We solved it by getting Apple's Disk Utility to repair the startup volume. Since your Macbook Pro's startup drive can't be in use during the repair you can either run Disk Utility from your MacOS install disk or connect your laptop to another Mac via firewire. Start your Macbook Pro in firewire mode and its hard drive will appear on the desktop of the host Mac. Use that machine's Disk Utility to repair the laptop's startup drive.

This solution worked for us.

Something else to try then, is to de-install the Sony driver. It does come with a de-install feature. Once that's done then repair disk permissions using either Disk Utility or a program such as Onyx (free). Then re-install the driver and repair permissions once again. You should also have a copy of DiskWarrior to rebuild your hard drive's directory. Over time directories become corrupted from use and DiskWarrior will re-establish links between programming and (among other things) their various extensions. DiskWarrior is an important program to have in your kit.

I know this is old, but just in case others are having this problem (I do - and cannot upgrade OS because my Mac is too old), I find that keeping the card in after the crash and restarting the computer works.

You might just need a newer SxS driver

Good Luck
