Just purchased Used EX1 - Questions
on Oct 25, 2011 at 1:01:42 pm

Hi Everyone,

I just purchased a used EX1 and I have some questions for you.

1. SDHC Cards - Is there a specific firmware version that I can check to see if this camera has, to know if it can use SDHC Cards?

2. Someone told me I can buy cards, adapters, and a reader from BH Photo. Can you tell me the best ones to purchase for each of these? Or should I buy these elsewhere? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

3. What about the E-films MxR Extreme Expresscard Adapter? Is this good? What SDHC Cards would you suggest for 16GB Cards?

4. If the firmware is not up to date, how do I get it updated? Does it need to be sent to Sony? Or can a local authorized repair facility do this?

Thanks so much for your help. I'm excited to be part of the XDCAM family!

Here's where you can find FW for the camera. There is also a link on this site for Sony's SW. XDCAM Browser and Transfer. I use Browser to make all my backups, retaining the BPAV file structure. I use Transfer to re-wrap the files to *.mov files. You don't need to re-wrap them for PP. But you do need to do that for FCP 7 and FCP X.

I believe the read me document explains how to install it, pretty easy.

I use Sony's SxS adapter:

And Sony's Memory Stick Pro Duo HX cards:

Sony also sells an SDHC card adapter, but they say it's for emergency use only. I'm not sure why they say that. But, I went with the above items and have had no issues.

Yes, welcome to you Greg.

May I suggest that you enhance your EX experience dramatically by viewing the Vortex Media DVD on the EX cameras where Doug Jensen gives a masterly workshop, thereby saving you hours of searching and enquiry. It certainly put me on the right track in making the most of this great camera.

Great suggestion. I got a copy as well. Watched on a plane trip to CA.

As long as Sony keeps writing their manuals the way they do, these 3rd party instructional guys will always have a job.

Thanks for you answers and suggestions. What about this for the adapters:

Would this work? If so, what SDHC Cards would you suggest. I'm seeing mixed reviews on Transend cards what about SanDisk? I'm looking at 16GB Cards.

I figured it would be safest to get Sony accessories for a Sony camera.

You could probably save a few bucks buying non-Sony. But, given the cost of the camera, why?

If you run into an issue, it can be quite costly.

If you wind up calling Sony about it, they might ask if you're using what they recommend. And they don't even recommend using their own SD adapter, except for emergency.

Sorry, but I haven't tried anything other than Sony.

Good luck.
