Streaming live video with Sony EX-1
on Sep 21, 2011 at 2:17:23 pm

I need to find the best way to stream video with my Sony EX-1 it does not have the DV output (only the EX-1R has it) it does have a HDV output, I want to know if I can stream in HD or HDV and what is the best way to do it, right now Ustream is the only thing I can think of but even with Ustream it looks like it has to be DV, please help, I need the most cost effective way that the video will look the BEST I will be using my Sony EX-1 and Macbook Pro.
p.s.
I do have the whole Adobe CS5 and I heard they have something that works with streaming, help me please :-)

[jonathan young] "I need the most cost effective way that the video will look the BEST I will be using my Sony EX-1 and Macbook Pro."

HD-SDI using Matrox MXO2-LE into a MacBook Pro that can handle it.
That's what I do.

Ustream free service doesn't support HD last I checked so you or they will downrez.

I have Livestream Premium account which supports 720p HD up to 1700kbps.

"Best" often is pricey although I wouldn't consider the box super expensive.
You can use HDV but I don't think Ustream handles HDV directly. If you're using Ustream you may need to buy Ustream Producer Pro and then buy the HDV option.

You might be able to use the A/V out and a Grass Valley ADVC-55 to convert analog to Firewire DV. I'm not sure if this would qualify as "Best" though.

I've used a couple of years ago an Adobe app to stream from my DVcam.
I think was something like this:

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashmediaserver/flashmediaencoder/

I guess that may works depending of your computer and your connexion.
And is free.

You might be able to rent the Matrox.

Also, I use the firewire DV out of my EX1r into my PC and use Microsoft Live Meeting. It sucks but it's cheap.

But he has EX-1 (not R) which does not have DV. That's the issue in his case.

A free streaming utility such as Adobe FMLE doesn't solve the issue of how to get it into the computer.

He can send HDV but the encoder needs to support it (I'm not sure FMLE does but it's worth checking).
Otherwise it's analog to digital or an SDI input box.

I know Ustream Producer Pro (and Wirecast) have an HDV plugin. The plugin itself is $99 but the streaming software is obviously an additional cost. If Adobe FMLE doesn't support HDV then it would seem Producer Pro with the HDV plugin may be the least expensive path.

I use Wirecast. You'll see my face atop that forum as well.
My workflow is EX to MXO2-LE to Wirecast on MacPro or MacBookPro with Express port. When I get a Thunderbolt Mac I'll get the MXO2 Thunderbolt adaptor.

You may be trying to "force" a price point solution that simply doesn't exist.

What if I used something like a Panasonic DVX100 or HVX200 that does SD?

Yes! Don't forget firewire.
Sign into Ustream, plug your firewire camera in and it should be read with their little java applet.
The Panasonic HVX work well. I have used them for a corporate gig a few times live streaming over the network with wirecast and using my Matrox for the sony ex HD streams. You could anamorphic or stretch the panasonics to make it look 16:9 if needs be since they are 4:3.
