EX 1 will not power up
on May 30, 2011 at 11:08:24 am

Im in the field shooting an expedition in the Philippines. Its humid and hot and Ive been shooting underwater (no problems with housing) and above for a month.
Now my EX1 will not power up. Ive been in air conditioning for the first time and its 100 degrees outside and 100% humidity. Ive tried putting it outside (in the cracked case) but no luck.

Im back to the P2 B cam.
Any advice?

thank you

David

Have you tried using AC power?
Any error or warning messages on the LCD?

Hi Craig,

Nothing when it is plugged in either. Looks like a dead circuit board.

Hmm, it went quietly. Nothing from AC obviously is bad. It could be the power in went bad so that would only be a little less than the motherboard given Sony's prices.

My Ex-1 powers up but at times stops recording. I might go through both cards but on and off. Am told it is the mother board at fault.

Could be fried... :) I'd guess water damage. Can you get it to a service center? If not- leave it unpowered for a while and maybe it will dry out. A bowl of rice in the sun would be one way to try to dry it up.

[Noah Kadner] "A bowl of rice in the sun would be one way to try to dry it up."

You think a nice dinner will work? Pilaf or Biriyani?

I'd be concerned about leaving it in the sun though given the potential heat and humidity situation. Similarly you could leave it in room with a constant climate for couple of days also pulling the internal battery. These are all list ditch efforts though.

Personally I'd go with brown rice as white is the bigger carb hit.

The problem is moisture. The different climates def. had a hand in this debacle. Once moisture enters the boards, it starts to corrode the circuts. I have seen this in MANY of the units brought in to me for repair.

It may work after a day or two. We had the same thing happen in Alaska with an S-VHS camcorder in '87 and after 3 days, everything worked fine.

Or, if it is a corrosion issue, things will only get worse.

Maybe it needed to be in one of those underwater bags ????
