SDHC card says "20MBs" - meaning?
on May 22, 2011 at 10:08:14 pm

Just got a new 10 class Transcend 32GB sdhc card to use in my Hoodman adapter - the transcend says "up to 20MB/s"...so what does that mean? My ex1R records at 35MBs HD 1920, so what is this card referring to? The recording speed or reading speed or transferring speed?

Thanks

K

[Kent Beeson] " My ex1R records at 35MBs"

It records at 35Mb/s or 35mb/s
MB MegaByte
Mb Megabit
8 bits to 1 byte.

http://www.dewassoc.com/performance/memory/MB_vs_Mb.htm

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabit
The megabit has the unit symbol Mbit or Mb.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megabyte
It is commonly abbreviated as Mbyte or MB (compare Mb, for the megabit).

Thanks as usual Craig - I meant though what is the transcend card referring to when it says up to 20MB/s? Is it compatible for me to shoot at 35MB/s, or what does it mean, reads at 20, writes at 20, transfers at 20, what? Will it work well with my EX1R at full HD 35MB/s?

Thanks

[Kent Beeson] " Is it compatible for me to shoot at 35MB/s,"
[Kent Beeson] "EX1R at full HD 35MB/s?"

The camera is not 35MB/s it is 35Mb/s.

http://www.transcendusa.com/Press/index.asp?LangNo=0&axn=Detail&PrsNo=1466
new Class 10 SDHC cards boast 20MB/s write and 16MB/s read speeds

20MB/s write
EX1R writes as 35Mb/s
again 8 Megabits to 1 MegaByte.

35 Megabits per second is 4.37 Megabytes per second.
20 Megabytes per second is 160 Megabits per second.

So your card being capable of 20 Megabytes/160 Megabits per second transfer means it's more than up to the challenge of 4.37 Megabytes/35 Megabits video.

Ahh shucks Noah, I wanted to see if Kent could pass the math test. I like teaching people the concepts so they can become self sufficient.
