Continuous Record HDV
on Apr 5, 2011 at 4:09:20 pm

I'm being sent to film a big corporate conference in two weeks... The sessions are going to be 3+ hours each and I've been asked to find a way to record the whole thing to tape, no hard drives, (in fact I suggested hard drive several times, and they said no, they just want to deliver tapes and be done with it)

They want to be able to record every session straight, without a break in the footage- (If I have to hot swap tapes, that is fine, they just need every second of the conference.......)

Due to the... "budget conscious" nature of the corporate world, the only cameras I'll have access to are a Sony EX1, or a Panasonic HVX200(which I would rather not use because it is my personal camera), and we have an HVR-M15U tape deck. They are willing to rent a deck system, or a couple of decks if necessary...

I've looked for ways of daisy chaining HDV decks through firewire/component and so far have come up with nothing outside of renting a big ol' broadcast van- so any help, or suggestions would be fantastic and much appreciated. Thanks!

The first thing you need is an HDV camera that gives you an HDV stream through FW.
Then you need a device to split the signal and record it on two HDV VTRs.
Something like this may be enough, but no sure: http://www.usbfirewire.com/fhubs.html

You're a godsend. This is something I could definitely swing by them-

I know the HVX sends an HDV stream through firewire, but am not familiar with the EX1, I can only assume that it does as well...?

The EX has a FW out that works when you set the camera in SQ (HDV), however I'm not sure if can be managed as any other FW signal. I think you need to connect it to an HDV device to get the signal available.
I have an EX-1 but I've never used this feature. Ask in the SONY XDCAM Forum.

The problem is that you can not daisy-chain with FW. If you stop a device in the middle of the change, you can disrupt the signal. You need to split the signal so you can overlap when changing tapes.
