Limitations of SxS-1 Cards
on Oct 28, 2010 at 11:12:03 pm

What are the limitations of the 64g SxS-1 cards as opposed to the SxS Pro cards. I don't believe SxS Pro cards are available in 64g, are they?
Thanks,
Michael Moser

The SxS technology, like any SSD based technology, lasts but a certain amount of time as measured by reading, writing, formatting etc. According to Sony the SxS-1 won't last as long as the Pro model. The statistic I hear the most is if you used it every day for 8 hours a day, it would "only" last 5 year. There is some kind of "gas gauge" that shows the remaining "life". I haven't seen them in 64GB.

Hi Michael,

The main difference between the two is lifespan. The SxS-1s will go for approx 10,000 read/write cycles; the SxS-Pros will go up to 100,000 read/write cycles.

Also, The EX-1 needs firmware 1.20 to support SxS-1. The EX-3 needs v 1.10. PMW-350, PMW-320, PMW-500 + PMW-EX1R are newer models and don't need any upgrades for SxS-1 support.

Best,

Ian

Thanks...I didn't realize it was an order of magnitude.
Does anyone know what the price of the 64G Pro cards will be?
Best,
Mike

What's nice is that they have been getting significantly cheaper. If I remember correctly, you can get a 32GB SxS Pro for what an 8GB card cost when they first came out...

My first 8Gb cards were around $500 each. However, compare that with the original price of P2, about $1000 a Gig.

Ian,

I purchased two of the SXS-1 cards. The dealer stated that the life span was approx 1500 read/write cycles - 5 years of daily usage (per Sony) which is great. But your figure of 10,000 is even better. Is that in fact the true figure? Dramatic difference.

re life span: How do you know when the gauge is getting close to empty? I understand that there is a "gas gauge," but that would require you to keep running some utility. Or do you know when the card starts to fail on recording/playback?

Or, is this a legal-department mandate -- a theoretical limit which nobody has yet reached in the real world?

Greetings Bob,

The "remaining life meter" can be found by going thru the status menu - button on top of the camera and of course having a SxS-1 card in the camera. Mine currently is showing 100% but then this card has had only one pass. Not by the camera currently but believe it to be on page 2 or 3. Hope this clarifies things.

Cheers!
