xdcam transfer / codec crash
on Sep 14, 2010 at 12:14:14 am

Hi,

I shot footage on a sony ex1.
when i start the app "xdcam transfer" 2.11 it always chrashes.

when i add "CalibratedMP4EXQ.component" to Library/Quicktime the app
does not crash but i cant see the clips because of: "Missing Codec...."

when i add "CalibratedXDCodec.component" the app shows in the start up window
that all the former missing codecs are available - so i suppose that i can see the clips
BUT the app crashes after 2-5 seconds.

so the codec is the problem.... am i right?
is there a codec that i can use that works fine with xdcam transfer and my ex1 clips?

i am very thankful for any help. my client wants to see the movie.
thanks, martin

Hi Martin,
Calibrated in incompatible with FC in the same machine.
You use one or the other.

Hi Martin,
There are two ways to get the codec:
- Final Cut
- The Calibrated Plugin.
As I said you can't have both installed.
But I don't know yet if you have FC or not.
If you have it (FC 6.0.2 on), you must uninstall the Callibrated.
This plugin has been designed for people that have no FC.

Hi Martin,

1. Calibrated{Q} XD Decode is a QuickTime Decode codec - it's not meant for computers with any version of Final Cut Pro.

2. Calibrated{Q} MP4-EX Import is a QuickTime Import component - that CAN work with FCP6.0.6 or FCP7 to import XDCAM EX MP4 files directly into FCP and FC Studio applications. However it does not work at all with XDCAM Transfer (as XDCAM Transfer reads the XDCAM EX MP4 file wrapper natively)

3. If you have FCP 6.0.2 or greater then you should have the Apple XDCAM EX codec - if it's not showing up with XDCAM Transfer then that means that your FCP install was not complete for some reason.

4. You can run XDCAM Transfer without codecs installed ( I believe there's a check box to do that somewhere in the XDCAM Transfer Options)

Hope the above help.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi Martin,

XDCAM Transfer does not provide codecs and will not work properly unless FCP is also installed. For the EX codecs you'll need FCP 6.0.2 or higher. The Calibrated plugin is a QuickTime decoder for use when there is no FCP installation on the same system.

There's some confusion here which Greg Booth explained.
Calibrated has several plugins. The one which allows MP4 direct import to FCP . . . works fine in FCP and creates no conflict and is what the original poster seems to have installed.

Firsthand info since I have that Calibrated plugin installed as well. It allows FCP and Quicktime based apps to handle the MP4 as if they had been wrapped to mov.

If XDCAM Transfer is not showing video when adding the media for re-wrap it does mean that FCP XDCAM EX codec is not being accessed and is likely an issue with the Final Cut Studio install.

Thanks guys for all the replies.

So what I did now... I deleted the"CalibratedXDCodec.component"
from Library/Quicktime because i got FCP 6.0.6 installed on my Mac.

The "CalibratedMP4EXQ.component" I kept in this bin
and tried to Log and transfer directly from FCP.

I can listen to the audio of the clips but can't see the video.
When I "transfer" the Clip into FCP it has audio but video is just a white frame.

Any ideas? The installation of FCP was fine without errors.
Thanks for your time. Cheers, Martin

Can you remove the Calibrated components completely, if only to test?

Are you running the Calibrated software in Demo mode? If so, that's may be why you're seeing white video with no audio. If not, it's a codec resources conflict because you have the Apple codec and the plug-in codec trying to perform the same decoding.

Hi Ian,

The 'white frame' from QuickTime is not from our Calibrated{Q} XD Decode or Calibrated{Q} MP4-EX Import - it's a standard QuickTime procedure to display a white or black frame when a codec is not installed for a particular MOV file.

The 'white' frame issue is not because of any conflicts with our software - basically Martin (and correct me if I'm wrong) sought our software out because XDCAM Transfer and FCP 6.0.6 were not seeing his XDCAM EX MP4 files.....which makes wonder whether something is wrong with his FCP installation - since if he removes Calibrated{Q} XD Decode then XDCAM Transfer reports that no codecs are found - which should not be the case if you have FCP6.0.6 installed correctly.

Martin - Calibrated{Q} MP4-EX Import does not work with Log and Transfer in FCP or with XDCAM Transfer - rather it lets you import XDCAM EX MP4 files directly into FCP and work with them natively. So there would be no conflicts whatsoever when having Calibrated{Q} MP4-EX Import installed when using XDCAM Transfer.

Martin - In the /Library/QuickTime folder - there should be the AppleHDVCodec.component (or called something like that) - which gets installed with FCP. FCP 6.0.2 or greater version of this Apple codec supports XDCAM EX.

Cheers,
Greg

Hi,

as Greg says its not a DEMO thing.
I've now tried all alternatives.

I checked the quicktime bin and as you said,
the "AppleHDVCodec.component" is missing.
I dont know why... if it's normally in the FCP installation package.

Can I order/download that component from somewhere additionally?

Cheers Martin

Hi Martin,

It's installed with FC Studio and can't be ordered as a separate component or an individual download from Apple.

Maybe Craig knows of a good way to re-install FCP 6 from your FC Studio 2 DVD's correctly without too much hassle.....

Hi

I can see that its been awhile since you discussed this issue.

I have a problem

I have stupidly changed the names of my BPAV.... so Premiere Pro CS6 will not accept it..

Is calibrated the thing that will solve my problem...if it is which bundle is preferable???

Hi Lars,

If you're trying to import XDCAM EX MP4 files into PPro CS6 then we don't have software for that workflow.

You should be able to just drag-n-drop the raw XDCAM EX MP4 files into your PPro CS6 Bin as PPro CS6 should be able to natively read XDCAM EX MP4 files that aren't in the proper BPAV folder structure.

Or you can download and install Sony's XDCAM Content Browser and it can rebuild the BPAV structure of XDCAM EX MP4 files.

I hope that helps!

Cheers

Hi,

If both PProCS6 and Content Browser 2.0.1 (or even earlier versions of Content Browser) can't import the XDCAM EX MP4 files then chances are that the XDCAM EX MP4 files are slightly damaged (internally) as both those applications should import orphaned XDCAM EX MP4 files without any problems.

I think VLC can play damaged files alot better as it can skip over damaged areas.

I hope that helps!

Cheers

If you renamed your folders you can recover the files easily--

Transfer can read a folder with just the .mp4s as an archive. copy/move your .mp4s to a new folder, -->Add Source.

To properly rebuild the BPAVs with new metadata, use Browser to manually import the files to a new location (I have documented this in several threads; please do a search if you run into issues..)

Hi Ian

Thx for your reply.

The issues is that when I imported from the cam - I renamed the BPAV... - But what you say is that I should copy the mp4 to a new folder - then you write add source (XDcam browser?)

I have the same issue. Once could view xdcam footage in fcp6.0.6 but now it won't play. Codec you describe seems to be logged in library - any ideas why it won't play qt clips in fcp - they are white with audio only? Any solutions?

Library screengrab shows all seem to be installed
