EMERGENCY - I Formatted SXS Card
on Aug 22, 2010 at 6:17:49 am

I shot a footage on an SXS card and formatted in error before I unwrapped them in the XDCam Browser 2.0 that I have.

I recovered the clips using recovermyfiles.com software. I see that the clips are in MP4 format and in the folders resemble the structure you usually see in the SXS cam.

When I opened the folder with the recovered clips in XDcam browser, I do not see the clips. I opened the folder using VegasPro9e and I see the MP4 file, but Vegas wont open the clip nor is it played in the normal media player

Use Calibrated Software to get at those mp4s. http://www.calibratedsoftware.com/

I have never had to do this, but I believe you can make a new BPAV folder from those MP4 files through the Clip Browser software.

But in this case the mp4 itself might be damaged. Creating a BPAV should only work if the metadata is damaged or missing. VLC should be able to play the mp4 otherwise.

I cannot open the recovered footages in VLC / quicktime/ windows media player. In vegas pro 9e, I can see it in the explorer but cannot pull it to the timeline / project media list.

VLC can natively play EX XDCAM mp4 files. Are you saying you can't open the files at all in VLC? Please be absolutely sure. I'm concerned because you mention other players as well that definitely can not play the files in the same sentence.

Please focus on that one player (VLC) and try to open one of the mp4 directly. Report any messages it gives you.

I believe your version of Vegas should also play the mp4 directly. I'm not sure if it needs the rest of the metadata.

There is a company that specializes in rebuilding the mp4 but their testing software is Mac only. If it's important to you, borrow a Mac.

Kindly note that, I recovered the files from the formatted drive and the recovered files are shown in widows explorer in MP4 format. These files are not opening in VLC media player

If they can't be played in VLC then they are damaged. As noted before by myself and others, you should contact http://www.aeroquartet.com/

your best bet is to send your card to http://www.aeroquartet.com/ if you are windons or buy thier software if you are on mac but be warned that it will be very expensive!!! I was forced to use them once when I mistakenly formatted a card during shoot. More or less they are the only one that I know that can deliver on XDCAM camera codec.

A tangental comment but these issues are "learning opportunities."
Although you didn't mention your workflow, this is why I'm not a fan of SxS (unless you have the money to buy many cards).
On should have enough cards so that one never has to offload and delete/format a card during a shoot. SDHC makes that a more affordable option. My subjective opinion but the biggest fail point is human error. Simplify workflow. Avoid offloading during a shoot.
