PMW-EX1 Stutter on Movement
on Jul 20, 2010 at 11:51:25 am

Hello,

I recently bought a PMW-EX1 and I've been happy with it, expect for one problem. When I record a Moving Object OR if the Camera Moves, I find that the image goes in and out of focus. The problem seems to be independent of what setting I use.

Could you recommend something that I can do?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,
Rajnesh

Without specific settings or details on how you are monitoring it's hard to say. Also do you understand the general recommended limits when shooting 24p and panning? These are not at all specific to EX. 24p has temporal motion limits when panning. That's why 60p or 60i are often used for sports.

[Rajnesh Domalpalli] "The problem seems to be independent of what setting I use."

Maybe you should be a little more specific about what settings you're referring to. For example, are you shooting with auto focus?

Don and Craig, Thanks so much for replying.

I used the following settings on my PMW-EX1 (given at Bottom).
and also uploaded a clip 46.2Meg 1280x720 QuickTime movie here. The Video was originally shot on 1920x1080 with the settings given below, then imported into FCP and Exported to the smaller format for upload.

In the Video you see the Camera Pan along with the Subject.
The trouble I'm having is with the Subject intermittently going in and out of focus/ becoming blurry.
Why is this and what can I do to alleviate the problem?

I don't think you understand some of the basics.
What frame rate?

[Rajnesh Domalpalli] "Shutter->Mode: Speed ShutterSpeed:1/96"
That's one way to increase stutter. You want more motion blur not less. Shutter speed relative to frame rate impacts motion blur.

You really need some basic understanding of Cinematography. We probably can't give all that info here since you seem to be at newest of newbie level. There's lots of good training DVDs out there.

You need to understand basic concepts like frame rates, shutter speed, temporal resolution. You need to understand the impact those choices have on the image and when and why one would change them. Then there's how you, the operator, handle motion when panning relative to the frame rate.

Did you ever work out how to get around this as I'm suffering from a similar issue and I know it's how I'm using the EX1R but don't know how to fix it
