Recovery of shots on SxS cards
on Apr 27, 2010 at 7:27:34 pm

Hi Everybody,

I have an urgent question, please answer asap if you know something:
We are shooting a small feature in Holland on the EX1 and our CA did a stupid mistake: He deleted all the MP4 Files from the Folder on the SxS card (just the actual MP4s, all the other info is still there).
We brought the Card to a specialist, for thi kind of problems. He managed to restore all the 15,3GB that were lost. The Clip Browser on the MAC also recognizes the files again, but just plays two seconds, then freezes the picture and the Sound becomes an ugly white noise.
We managed to gather some information, saying that the recovery of SxS cards is a hustle due to the difference in formatting system.
Is there a way to get the stuff back intact????
Please, help otherwise we have to reshoot an entire day which was a real complicated set up.
Any help is welcome!!!!!!

Thanx a lot.

Greetz,

Sascha Engel

BTW you should re-examine your workflow if there's this kind of risk for human error.
You might be brave enough to post your workflow.

Copying from cards should always be with ClipBrowser with CRC enabled.
There's no reason to be touching the contents of folders.
Buy enough cards so that one NEVER has to offload during a shoot.
If you can't afford enough SxS then get SDHC adaptor and good SDHC cards. Human error is far greater risk than the cards.

I think I had the same reaction when I first read the original post: "What in the world was the guy doing, playing with just the MP4 files?"

I'm sorry I don't have a solution other than the people Craig recommended...his suggestions for avoiding this kind of debacle in the future as well.

Well, usually our workflow is ok, I copy always personally the whole BVAP Folder, but in this case, the CA forgot the HD and wanted to empty space on his iBook, to connect the Card Reader and put it on the Laptop.
Unfortunately the card reader with the card was already connected to the Computer during his deleting mission, and he saw those clips in the finder under movies - thought they are old waste on the system and deleted them - mistake of tiredness after a 14 hour shooting day. Believe me, he was almost executed for that fault and probably had the worst moment in his life by himself. But it is how it is, and taught me also the lesson - never to let somebody else touch those tasks - to me, till now - those things never happened.
Do you know if that recovery software you mentioned under your weblink has a good chance of succeeding? It is relatively expansive and it's no use buying it, if it's not working.
Did you hear that somebody managed to recover SxS card files like that before?

Greetings,

Sascha

I believe you can test if free. If it reports that the files can be recovered then you pay. Then you need to decide how much it's worth.

[Sascha Engel] ", the CA forgot the HD and wanted to empty space on his iBook"

As I noted about that's why you should AVOID putting yourself in a situation where you have to copy the cards during a shoot. I'm repeating myself but either buy more SxS cards or get adaptor and good SDHC cards.

Offloading during a shoot invites human error. DON'T RISK IT.
Think of how much money this mistake may cost you. Buy the cards!

Yeah it would be like a 35mm camera assistant checking which negative had been shot already by holding it up to the light. Ooops...

Yes Sascha.
Aeroquarter is the answer.
Try if you can fix it with their free application (Treasured).
If not, contact them.
The process is quite easy. You send them a short clip of some EX footage and they send you a little application to fix the files.
It works.

Hi Rafael,

thanx we managed to recover it like this. Unfortunately, I was apparantly to desperate in my asking for help. And I almost was expelled from Creative Cow for my Subject Healine - using words like urgent and help. So, two lessons learned - never let the CA handle the cards and do not get over emotional on the COW.
Thanx again you were a great help - as usual!

Hi Sascha,
Cows are ruminants and make the digestion at their own pace:-)
Sorry I didn't answer your posts in Vimeo.
There is a curious circumstance: since the problems started in Thailand, when I try to get in my Vimeo page, I'm redirected to the Thai Ministry of Information's web site.
I hope you got a nice B&W movie.
Cheers,
rafael
