Has anyone had any experience with the VCL-EX0877 0.8x Wide Angle Lens Adapter. I'm in need of a wide angle with low distortion.

I have one for sale, Andy. It's a nice lens. A bit heavy. I need more of a fisheye.

I've the SONY .8 quite a bit. It's excellent for working close to the subject. Under most circumstances it's fine; it's sharp, reasonably flair resistant, goes on quickly.

Cons: --Some barrel distortion, but usually not objectionable. --Heavy at the front of the camera but I've gotten used to it. -- depth of field is so great that dust and dirt on the lens show up in the picture, specially when shooting into the light. You have to keep it clean --Goofy lens protection, sort of a built in lens shade, makes it impossible to use a matt box or filters.

If I anticipated using it all the time I would suggest buying the wide angle Fujinon that's made for the EX3.

The overview by Max Reid is right on the money. The adapter adds a kilo of weight to the front of the camera. if you can work with that then this add-on W/A is a bargain from the money Sony is asking, which is about half of the cost of a Century piece. You get about a 20% - 25% increase in field of view over the stock EX lens. I use mine quite a bit.

Thats exactly what I was looking for, I don't think I would mind the weight. I'm just having trouble framing a few shots up close. Thanks for the info guys.

Ditto here, I purchased one for each of our cameras. The price is right, the quality is good. We just don't use them enough to justify the Fujinon wide lens.

What Don said! Max Reid got it just right.
When you get into a bit of lens-flare situation, better make sure it's very clean. Huge depth of field.

It seems a bargain to me, esp when you consider that the "zoom-through" focus on this converter is far superior to the similarly-priced "adapters."

If possible, try it out -- you should see for yourself.

It does increase the camera weight quite a bit.

[Don Greening] "is a bargain from the money Sony is asking, which is about half of the cost of a Century piece. "
Don,
The .75 WA of Century is pure gold.
You can push the full zoom without any distortion and no need of funny thing to focus.
Cheaper than the SONY, and much lighter, is the .6 WA of Century.

Thanks for the info, Raf. Remember when the first Century W/A adapter came out for the EX1? It was found to have issues and they took it off the market. It's nice to know that the replacement works properly. It retails for $1235.00 which is more than twice the price of the Sony .8 adapter. I think I paid around $450.00 for mine back in 2008. The Century .6 adapter lists for $490.00 at the Schneider web site.

Hi Don,
You are right.
I had to wait few months till they released the new WA.
There is something wrong about the price in their web site.
They show two different prices.
The real price is some 900 bucks.
Happy Lao New Year

The price on century's websites will always be higher (sometimes up to 100% higher) than what you can actually get it for from one of their authorized dealers. They do this because they refuse to undersell their dealers.

Never take the price on century's website at face value as you can get it cheaper elsewhere, gaurenteed.
