logging with XDCAM transfer
on Mar 26, 2010 at 11:03:34 pm

I would like to use an old laptop to log some clips done with the EX1.

I installed the XDCAM transfer software, but when I lunch it tells me that I need some component as the "XDCAM EX (VBR) codecs". The software opens, I can browse the clips but i cannot see any image.

This codecs are installed with FCP 6.02, but due to some hardware limitation, I cannot install FCP 6 on this laptop...

My question is:
Can I install only the "XDCAM EX (VBR) codecs" with no FCP so I can use the XDCAM transfer software to view and log some clips?

I tried to use the XDcam clip browser, but it seems that it run only on intel, not on Power PC...

Thanks...

CalibratedSoftware has plugins to allow EX video to be viewed in Quicktime in non FCP systems (both Mac and Windows). The trials have an ugly gray band in them but you can test to see if it'll work on your laptop before buying.

VLC will also play the clips but won't read the time code.

I checked the calibratedsoftware website, but it seems that the codec works only on intel computer not on the Power PC G4.

I can see the video with VLC, not so smooth and I don't have the timecode
I believe it's a hardware limitation of the computer I want to use.

I'll find another solution.

thank you.

I think a G4 is not going to be up to the task of playing EX clips. When I first got the EX1 I was still using a G5 desktop and even that struggled a bit when editing although it did play individual clips cleanly.

I think you're faced with getting a new Intel laptop. There's no way around the G4's power limitations.
