How to grab a still directly from an XC-cam disc on Windows?
on Jan 20, 2010 at 9:55:12 am

Hi all,

We make this television show of which we also use stills in a related magazine. Our workflow now is grabbing stills in our editing department, which is kind of cumbersome for the journalists. I now should look for a way to grab a Full Quality still from a disc on an XP-system.

We have this spare XD-cam player (U1) and I was wondering if the software, or another Sony FQ view-software, is able to make a grab on an XP system so it can be edited (eg de-interlaced in PS, cropped, resized, ...).

I was thinking about using the viewer and make a screenshot, crop it and de-interlace it in PS and export it.

Thanks for your help!

Brecht

Hi Bretch,
Your post is a bit confusing because you ask about Windows and XP-system.
I don't know much about Windows, etc, but up o the specs of the XDCAM desk, I don't think you will have any problem to manage it from a PC and download the image for whatever you want.
Not sure if you will be able to get a good still without downloading, but may possible with something that reads the MFX files..
You may ask for more accurate information to Craig Seaman. In the SONY EX Series XDCAM Forum. He knows all the tricks of XDCAM in PC and in Mac.
Best,
Rafael

You don't really need a U1, you can read from the card or from a copy of the card on a portable drive, etc. and pull stills easily from clips using Clip Browser. They're saved as .bmp files which you can then open in PS and tweak, then save in whatever format you need. Here's an example (crunched to be under the 500k limit):
