seeking nanoflash comparison footage
on Nov 21, 2009 at 8:40:25 pm

Hello,

I'm considering buying or at least renting a Nanoflash and after considerable searching haven't found any side by side comparisons of the "standard" SxS XDCAM HQ to the nano's 160 long GOP recording. Anyone done this or know of where I can find some?

Thanks!
Gerry

The Convergent Design website has lots of samples but no side by side comparison shots, which is what you're after, right?

there's this that has one small comparo shot:

Failing that you might want to contact Michael Palmer (click on his head at the top for contact info) because I know he has some personal comparison shots. At least he did several months ago when he sent me some. No, I don't have them anymore.

Hi Don,

Yeah, I'm looking for side by side or 2 separate files, with 2 or 3 seconds of motion that I could check out on my HD monitor.

I've seen Michael's write ups and positive comments but it would be helpful to see some actual footage and how much of an improvement it makes. Seems like if it was a huge improvement CD should have this on their website, no?

Thanks!
Gerry

Hey Guys,
I have a new article coming out this week on the Cow "Nano takes EX3 to New Level", that includes screen grabs of 100Mbps files and the native EX codec files and you will see a significant improvement.

Good Luck

Michael,

You already have that article up on the tutorials section of the COW. Do you mean you're adding to the existing article with frame grabs or are you talking about a different article that's pending?

I didn't realize it was up. There is a good screen grab comparison in this article.

Good Luck

Gerry, here's a frame grab courtesy of Michael Palmer which demonstrates the difference between the EX codec at 35 Mbps 4:2:0 as opposed to the Nano version at 100 Mbps 4:2:2.

The caption that accompanies the picture is as follows:

"73. How does this compression compare to the native Sony EX1/EX3 CODEC?
Compare the two images below, the left image is from the native XDCam EX is 4:2:0 at 35 Mbps, while the right image was recorded on the nanoFlash (via the HD-SDI out of the EX1) using the XDCAM 422 at 100 Mbps. Note this is an extreme pan and rotation test and not indicative of the normal quality from the EX1."

Thanks for the email, Michael.

Hi,

It's nice to see that grab, but it would be more helpful to see some moving footage under more realistic conditions. I appreciate the responses.

Thanks!
Gerry

Wow, those tiny images speak volumes. I'd love to get my hands on some short clips of the same shots, xdcam and nanoflash to see how it compares grading. If I can see an improvement I'd very seriously think about the purchase (got to get those last equipment purchases in before the end of the year!).
