How to convert MOV wrapped XDCAM (JVC HM700) to MP4 ?
on Oct 24, 2009 at 12:51:27 pm

Sony has a tool that converts MP4 wrapped XDCAM files to MOV wrapped XDCAM files.
What about the other way round? Any ideas how to convert files WITHOUT actual rendering (just changing the wrapper) ? And.. with rendering?

Hi! I've followed the tutorial and I am not able to select between exporting to
MXF. and MPEG4. There is no checkbox, as in the end of the video. I'm running FCP 6.0.6.
and XDCAM TRANSFER 2.5.1. (which to the best of my knowledge is the program converting
the sequence to MPEG4, or in my case only to MXF.)

I want to get the footage on the SxS card again, and be able to view the footage on the EX1, because
I'm filming the second part of a scene and I want to compare the lighting on location. I filmed the first
part of the scene and only imported the files through XDCAM TRANSFER and deleted the original MPEG4
files.

I've tried to export the sequence in MPEG4 using Compressor and Quicktime Conversion, but ClipBrowser will not recognize the files when I try to import them and create the metadata.

Hopefully you guys can help me out here...I need have this problem fixed in 18 hours!:)

Hi Anton,
You mean that you get the "Export to XDCAM" option, but you can not choose between MP4 and MFX?
Very strange.
Re-install the Transfer Tool, that is the one who install the "XDCAM Plugin in FC.

Current version of XDCAM Transfer is 2.11.0 so that might be the issue.

ClipBrowser is 2.6 BTW.

Rafael you are my knight in shimmering armor! Not shining - you shimmer!
And thanks for the info on how to get the metadata by importing mp4. files to ClipBrowser - priceless!

Updated from XDCAM-transfer 2.5.1 to 2.11

Hi Anton,
Great that worked, and thanks for the link.
The expert in Metadata here is Craig. He knows well all the XDCAM related software, and best practices.
normally I download in the field directly to two Hds and delete the SxS cards.
Now with the NANO, even easier: Drag & drop.

Sorry to eerybody.. I wrote wrng my question.. I need to convert to mov NOT FROM mov. Anyway.. also this is usefull but it should be a batch.. Having to do it clip by clip makes it useless for production. Finally you need to have final Cut.. Is just a wrapper... Why can't I find a simple tool standalone to do it?

Please restate the question then.
JVC can create an XDCAM EX MOV and apparently you want to change that to MP4 and that's what you apparently asked.

If you want a "universal" master you should be recording in MP4 (BPAV) which can be
1) used as is
2) wrapped to MXF Using Sony ClipBrowser
3) wrapped to MOV Using Sony XDCAM Transfer

To wrap MOV to MP4
Final Cut Pro does this (Mac only)

MOV to MXF
Convergent Design has a utility (Mac only)

To use XDCAM MOV on non Final Cut Pro systems (Mac or Windows)
Calibrated Software has plugins for this

See above. Pick one based on your need.

Convergent Desing utility is very good.. allows batch and is fast... the only problem is that it creates 2 wrong mono tracks (with noise pulses and no sound) inside. The MXF created with FC are (if you put the right settings) correct on audio. Does somebody know how to correct the audio in Convergent Design's utility ?

Hi Marcello,
It seems that you are trying to re-wrap clips with stereo audio.
I think there is a limitation somewhere.
Probably you will need to set your stereo as Two Mono channels.
