Convergent Design Nano Flash

Hi All-

I see the nanoFlash is now shipping. Is this a game-changer for the EX3? I mean, with the EX3 and the nanoFlash do you basically have a camera with almost same image quality as say, the 48K Panasonic HPX-3000 for about 11K?!

Just looking for a reality check :-)

Best,
Dave J

Hi Michael,
Have you already got your NANO?
I'm in Spain so it will still take few weeks for me.
I'm still thinking about the best powering option.
Cheers,
rafael

No, you'll still have a little plastic camera with terrible ergonomics and a small imager.

But you can dream.

Not everybody can work for millionaires.
I would like to see any of those cameras (HDX-900/HDW-730S/DXC-D50) where I bring my EX-1.

Sorry...didn't mean to sound snobbish.

But the question struck me funny...sorta like putting a wing on a Mazda and calling it a Lamborghini.

For the record, I want a Nano badly.

Zoom zoom.

I didn't mean to start a fight...lol.

I realize there are many differences between the EX cams and what are considered more "high-end" or shoulder mount models. But in terms of pure image resolution, the EX with 1/2" chips, full-raster 1920X1080, adding the nanoFlash with 4:2:2 color space, and up to 220mbps, Oh, and 24bit/48k balanced audio recording to CP cards, how can it not be taken seriously? Convergent Design claims that the images are close to looking uncompressed.

I didn't take it as snobbish, I thought it came from someone who invested 4 times as much money for a very good tape based system. If I had dumped what much into a camera with a native 720 sensor system I may have made this same spirited post. The HPX-3000 was way ahead of its time and it actually has full raster 1920x1080 HD sensors and not those 960x540 sensors that have the interpolation methods to make HD. I guess what is hard to believe is that these smaller 1/2 sensors have more resolution than that 30K Panasonic 900. Everything is getting smaller and better.

The EX is a terrific camera, used for PUBLIC ENEMIES along with the F23 and intercutting was impressive. The nano will allow you to capture full range of what the camera is delivering, it will also help reduce costs with the recording media, the Compact Discs are dirt cheap by comparison. Your EX is a fantastic camera, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Michael,

I would be interested in your report on a real Nano. In particular I wonder if the Nano responds to record, stop commands from the camera or from a remote device. Or would I have to press record on the nano, and then use the camera to control zoom?

You can set the Nano to (trigger) record when you push the record button on the camera. You need to set the camera to record run and when the Nano see timecode it starts recording. For single camera shoots this is the way to go. However you may need a timecode generator to feed multiple Nano units a common TC for multi-camera shoots.

That's clever on the part of Convergent. Just use the signal coming from the sdi.

Michael:
Just looked at your picture of your EX3, showing the Nano. Wow that is a beautiful set up you have. Who's focus and matt box do you have? And was it worth it focus pulling wise?

Redrock Matte Box. No power to the nano though. What shoe to nano mounting unit is being used?

It is the Fujinon XA17x7.6BERM w/2x Extender mounted to the Fujinon ACM-21 2/3 adapter for the EX3. I also have the Vari Zoom PG-F12 lens control.

Good Luck
