What format... 1080/30p?
on Jul 6, 2009 at 2:47:20 am

I'm shooting a corporate project, and I'm new to the EX1 and HD. I'm based in North America. It is to go on DVD, the web, and possibly some higher res format that could be stored on the client's computer and played on HDTVs in meeting rooms etc. I was thinking to shoot 1080/30p. Any thoughts whether that is a good choice?
Thanks!

I shoot everything at 1080p30. It provides the most resolution, and any frame can be easily converted to a still image should you need to do so. It also avoids annoying interlacing problems if you're doing any visual effects work.

If I need to convert to interlaced, I'll do that through Apple's "Compressor" software. Easy enough.

Everything we shoot is in 1080/30p. Works beautifully.

30p is great, as long as you don't need to go to PAL then it is not a good idea.

Something to keep in mind...720P downconverts to SD much better than 1080P

Thanks for everyone's thoughts. It will only be output for NTSC and I won't need to down-convert to SD - so I'll stick with 1080/30p. Cheers.

Just curious, what kind of DVD are you outputting if you're not down converting to SD?

I use Apple's Compressor to encode DVDs. I add a small amount of sharpening which provides a very good-looking picture.

When I go to tape I do it in real time via component to Betacam SP through a Blackmagic Decklink Extreme card.
