Focus Enhancements

I will try to make this short. I have a Sony EX3 camera. I am recording into a Focus Enhancements FS-4ProHD. I was told to use 720/60p setting. I can't get the recorder to record from the camera since it is HQ. When I hit record, nothing happens. I am using this file to put in Final Cut and make a reference file to put in Pro Presenter. When I put it into Pro Presenter, the video is pixelated. Any ideas what I need to do ? I can record in 108060i to the recorder, but the video is pixelated.

I wouldn't use this external recording device because the EX is a much better codec than HDV that the Focus Enhancements FS-4ProHD can record. This device can only record HDV and not the XD Cam EX codec. This is a huge difference in quality.

THe EX records full raster 1920x1080 i or P use the HQ record mode that yields 35Mbps bit rate, HDV = 25Mbps bit rate. Not worth the time or expense if you asked me.

If you want to unleash the cameras potential you should find the Convergent Design Flash XDR and record at a much higher bit rate that wraps the file in MXF or .MOV Quicktime. The Flash XDR will give you added record time and near uncompressed broadcast quality.

Well, the problem is that I can't spend 5 grand for this. Would it be just easier to get a larger card to record to. There is an 8 gb card in there now but I need at least 40 minutes of video.

If you need an alternative to SxS cards then purchase the MxR SDHC adapter and some Transcend 32 gig SDHC class 6 cards.

or the Transcend 16 gig cards are really affordable.

Exactly the same quality and file as using the SxS cards. The only issue is that you sacrifice the over-crank feature.

Do some research on MxR/SDHC, MxM, Hoodman RAW SDHC, and you will see how this works. I would onlt recommend Transcend Class 6 SDHC at the moment. There are alot of good companies but this is the brand hasn't had any major issues.

You're Welcome

Check out the Convergent Design Nano Flash HD-SDI/HDMI compact flash recorder that ships in June.

This is how you get the highest quality from these EX cameras.
And 32 gig CF Cards are under $80

Good Luck

Yes, nowadays you have SDHC for low cost and NanoFlash for best quality. Both seem much more cost effective than SxS whose only advantage may be overcranking and the cards that came with the camera would suffice for that.

There is little reason to shoot HDV which you'd be using with Focus Enhancements.
