Underscan adjustment on EX1 LCD?
on Apr 15, 2009 at 9:13:21 pm

Just doing some test shooting and noticing that the LCD, viewfinder
and component/sdi output is NOT showing the whole picture, when looking
at footage in fcp, I can see things that were not in frame before (set extensions)

is there an adjustment for this? I searched the manual .pdf and found nothing.

any help much appreciated.

I don't believe so, I'd go with an outboard monitor if you're concerned about underscanning.

I feel your pain.

Yeah, that's the craziest thing, the LCD VF does not show true underscan. As mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any adjustment for it so I'm just real careful now, especially after finding extraneous stuff in the picture after I got back.

I don't have time or room for an external monitor- I do a lot of run-and-gun, quick turnaround stuff, so need to rely upon whats in front of me.

thanks for the sentiments Robert.

there are 2 things sony did VERY wrong on the EX (but only 2 that i can tell)

1. Not showing everything at least on the LCD or viewfinder that ends up recorded.

Thats just wrong.

2. What the heck were they thinking putting the usb/component jacks right under
the bulky zoom control block. you have to rotate it to plug a component jack in.
not everyone has an sdi-component adapter.

Um with all respect that's like 99% of all prosumer camcorders so I wouldn't really say Sony should be singled out for doing something 'wrong'. If it's really an issue for you, and I don't see why it would be because we're talking maybe 10% of your frame that you should be considering as out of action safe anyway you need an external monitor. You can mount a battery powered 5" or 7" right on top of the camera. It's as simple as that.

I'm with you Noah, but the EX is so "right" in all other aspects. :)

I've also got an HD100 and the LCD on that shows whats on tape.
